Capturing directly to an external device

On Page 7 of Barry Green’s DVX book it states that

“… The terminal also features a new syncro lock function that allows the DVX to remotely start and stop an external DV device connected to it via a DV cable…”

He goes on to explain the three recording modes, including CHAIN mode, that appear to allow for the recording of the video signal directly to an external device.

Is this saying that it is possible to record directly to a hard drive, for instance, and not use tape at all?

If yes, then:

  • Is the video signal compressed?

  • If it is, is it desirable or even possible to capture an uncompressed signal and feed that into Vegas 5 to obtain better quality, perhaps? If so, how is this done?

  • Apparently, the video signal can be captured via DV Rack onto a hard drive at the same time as it is being recorded to tape. (I assume this is the compressed output.) But DV Rack requires the use of a computer. Is there another method that can be used to capture video output without requiring the use of a nearby computer?

Thanks very much for your advice.

Yes it is possible to record directly to hard disk, bypassing tape entirely (although apparently some of the users of direct-to-HD recorders are encountering some difficulties).

No, the signal will not be uncompressed. Everything that comes out of the firewire port is compressed, identically to how it would be compressed on tape.

No you can't get uncompressed output from a DVX (unless the reel-stream.com modification becomes reality).

Yes there are computerless versions of DV Rack for strictly recording on a hard disk, for options look at the FireStore FS-4 or the nNovia QuickCapture.
