Capturing audio with DVX100?

Hey,

Was talking with my DP and she said she would recommend against capturing audio directly within camera. Has anyone done this successfully?

Or do most here use a field recorder? Also, what about a field mixer? What does one cost?

Thanks,

Chris

You mean, she recommends against "single system" (recording audio tracks to the same mini-dv tape as the video track) and wants to go "double system" (a separate audio recorder recording on its own tapes)?

Worked a DVX shoot a couple years ago where they had a sound recordist with his own mixer and DAT recorder. Sound was lousy (which is not an indictment of double-system recording per se, but why bother?)

Double-system recording means you have to maintain synch between camera and audio recorder, or accept a certain amount of drift which will have to be corrected on your timeline when you post.

Maybe this is more of a matter for your sound recordist to advise on, than your DP.
