Capturing Audio inside music hall?

Hi

I have been asked to do a 'Video booth' at a Ball.. This means capturing people and guests leaving messages at the back of the hall whilst dj music is playing in the front.

Video will be captured on an ac90 and I have a partition I can use to act as a booth but my question here is should I use my 'Ryecote softie on an AT875r' (never used a windshield indoors before)

OR

Is there a better solution? (I have a zoom h4n to utilise also)

If the mic moves its motion through the air generates "wind" across it just as if the air itself was moving. At least use the foam windshield on the mic.

A shotgun may not the best choice. A hand-held would work.. Reporters mic like the RE5O or Senheiser MD42 or 46 or other H/H omni. An SM58 or similar live performance H/H cardioid would likely offer the most isolation, all of which would need to be held close to the person speaking.

Great thanks.. I do have a Beta 87c, though I can never trust people with alcohol near my equipment at the best of times..

I have seen reporters using a handheld EV mic also.

Maybe the solution here is to try and capture the footage and audio in the hallway?

My daughter wanted me to set up a similar thing at her wedding but I put her off as I said she would probably just get a load of garbage or drunk people just messing around. She ended up with a photo booth so people could take fun snaps and dress up a bit.

What I would do for a ball is make it a little more informal and shoot it like some vox pops with a suitable person asking relevant questions. A hand held mic will be best and your SM87 will be Ok but at least this makes it more controlled and you will not just end up with loads of footage that is useless.

I wouldn't be concerned about abuse to the 87. Maybe not quite as tough as the almost indestructible 58, they can still take all kinds of abuse without issue... Drunks spilling stuff and /or other 'mishaps' .. No worrys.
