capturing ADCHD files into premiere

I just started back using premeire (5.5) and I'm trying to import AVCHD files from Sony NXcam camera. Is there not a special capture window for that? What I did was click import and search through the folders on the SDcards for the files and brought them into the bin. I notice their status says "pending" so it looks like premiere is copying them over to my drives as a pretty slow speed (using macpro tower xeon processors 2.66ghz I think (work computer). Several times I have disconnected the camera to find the footage has disappeared. even after I thought it was all capured/copied or whatever. I dunno man, it just seems like a slow, clunky process with premiere and these files. AM I MISSING SOMETHING HERE??

Thanks

You do not capture digital files. You ingest them.

Find the Private Folder on your SD Card and copy it in its entirety to a location on your Local Drive.

In Premiere go to the Media Browser ...locate the "location" of the files on the local drive. Drill in until you see the MTS files. Select all and drag them to a Bin in the Project Window.

That sounds like what I've done this last time. Still its too time consuming compared to working with p2 files, which does utilize a type of capture window (on ediis it does anyway) .

Doesnt sound like thats what you did to me. YOu tried to import direct from the SD card. THat would meean as soon as the SD card was removed...you would not have any files in the local system

P2 was exactly the same in PPRO. Copy them to Local Drive and Ingest to PRO from there using Media Browser or darg them from an Explorere Window.

Its a 20 -30 second process compared to "capture" which is realtime from tape. Capture involves digitising usually.

Note : any NLE only ever refers to the files as "instances". They do not import the actual files. Only the references to them.

Not true. Ever used Edius? I haven't tried doing it with AVCHD files cause I don't have the latest version, but with P2 files you simply choose: capture<P2capture and it brings the "instances into your bin and you can edit immediately..BUT it also automatically copies them in the background to your designated folder/drive. No "drilling" down to the proper files and having to manually copy them.
I guess I'm just disappointed Premiere doesn't work like that..skipping all those extra steps.

I see what you mean now.

No Premiere does not do it that way.

Does Edius transcode the files in the process or does it work with the original native files?

Dude. Copying one folder from card to hard drive is hardly a disappointingly-onerous task.

If you ask me, Premiere is really strange in the way it handles AVCHD. I say this coming from FCP (pre-X).

FCP properly recognizes the whole file hierarchy of AVCHD, as with p2, and presents you with the clips-as-shot (e.g., it presents spanned clips as a single clip, etc) for potential ingest. You point it at the card (or card image), and it recognizes the contents and handles them correctly.

Premiere... ugh... it kinda DOES the right thing, but in a bizarre way. You have to drill down through the folder hierarchy (Private/AVCHD/BDMV/Stream) to the raw MTS files, and drag those to your timeline. If the MTS file is part of a spanned clip, it indeed puts the whole spanned clip onto the timeline... but with the name of the MTS file you chose. So, if a spanned clip consists of 1.MTS, 2.MTS, and 3.MTS, and you drag 2.MTS to the timeline, in the timeline you see 2.MTS that comprises the contents of 1,2, and 3. If you drag 1.MTS to the timeline also, you get a clip with the same content, but a different name. ugh.
