capturing 24pa, should i have to render?

yes, yet another question about 24pa capturing. i spent almost all of yesterday reading every post in the fcp forum dealing with capturing 24pa, just to make sure i'm doing everything right. i've reached that point where it's almost funny that i can't get this to work the way it should.

here's my situation. i shot 24pa on a clean tape. i capture using this easy setup:

"DV NTSC Advanced (2:3:3:2) Pulldown Removal"

i delete the original sequence, and use a new sequence that is for a 23.98 timeline.

i read in a few posts that if i have to render at this point, then i am doing something wrong. woohoo! i have to render. F**K!!! my other option is to go to the tools menu, and do the "remove advanced pulldown" at that point.

seriously, this should be so easy. based on the million posts i've read here and everywhere else, i should just have to capture my footage with this setting and do the pulldown removal on the fly. then i should just need to make sure my sequence is set to 23.98, and all should be copacetic. BUT NOOOOO!!!!! i know i'm not an idiot because there are so many posts dealing with the same exact thing.

i would be happy just rendering or doing the pulldown again after my capture, but my footage still seems jumpy.

here's my other problem. i shot anamorphic squeeze mode. i tried making my own easy setting where the only thing i change is the anamorphic check box.

have to render or redo pulldown.

i try capturing without anamorphic and use the factory preset, then set to anamorphic after the capture.

have to render or redo pulldown.

look, i'm really sorry to post this yet again. i shot 24pa for the first time after reading a lot about it, and when was the right time to do it, blah blah blah. but i'm really on the verge of a nervous breakdown.

has anyone else had this happen, and finally found the magic
"no seriously, i really want to remove the pulldown during capture" checkbox?

because if you have, i'd really like to know where that is.

Sorry--our problem was different from yours: a loose connection and needed to modify BlackMagic driver after upgrading FCP so am deleting my comment here, but way below, another problem we had may relate to yours.

I'd double check your Sequence settings.

Also, after you capture, right click on the clip in the Browser, from the pop-up menu, go to Item Properties. Make sure you did get it captured properly.

thanks ben. i'll give that a shot tonight.

We captured some footage using the same settings as you did (and shot 24pa/squeeze). When we captured sections of the tape (capture/now/ and escape to end capture), we got the green line. When we captured the entire tape we got the red line.

We are experimenting now with changing system settings so that the capture ends before the tape does. Wonder if this is a 24pa/pulldown issue?

We were able to eliminate the red line/render problem by capturing the tape in two sections (using your settings) IF we used mark-in and mark-out points to grab the second piece.

Another user wrote this to me:

"I think once you stop the camera while recording, the pulldwon pattern breaks which makes it hard for FCP to correctly remove the pulldown. I guess your batch captured footage is still 60i ... You might need to log each take seperatly for the pulldown removal to work.
Hope this helps!"

Go figure.

A creative cow forum expert confirmed:

You are ALWAYS going to want to capture individual shots when capturing 24pa. If you try to capture the entire tape, it won't work; it reverts to 29.97 video, and it'll look bad because the 24pa pulldown is still in the shots.

Why does this happen? Because as you stop the camera between shots, the pulldown cadence stops as the shot ends. It re-establiahes itself when you roll for the next shot. However, between those two shots, the cadence is messed up.

So: if you shot in 24pa, you have NO CHOICE but to capture individual shots. Well, that's not quite right: you can pull your hair out using Cinema Tools to get the pulldown removed from gazillions of shots in one 60-minute-or-so long clip.

I have to STRONLY disagree, Wendy. I used to do 24pA with my DVX all the time, the issue you mention never happened. I'd capture whole tapes all the time with no problems. I simply don't buy it. Defies my personal experience, and makes no logical sense, as I don't know why the camera would mess up pulldown when it's not running. Between shots, there's nothing on the tape for the camera to "not" flag. It's simply flagged frames on the tape, nothing more. "...as the shot ends" just doesn't make sense to me.

Again, I used to capture whole tapes with Capture Now when I used a DVX100a and never had a problem.

You will have a problem if you change the recording mode of the camera on the same tape, but if the whole tape is recorded in 24pA, well, I never had a problem capturing the whole tape.

i've been capturing my whole tapes at once. the whole tape is footage shot in squeeze mode, 24pA. i'm going to try capturing parts, and see if this fixes my problem.

i don't know Ben, you obviously know more than i do (and probably a lot of others here as well) because you are an apple certified trainer, but it seems like LOTS of people are having the exact same problem.

i guess it's easier to blame this on FCP than think i've done something wrong, but i can say for a fact that i've done tons of reading and followed directions to the last letter.

I'm not saying there're can't be a problem in some situation. Just that it's not consistant problem across all FCP systems.

As for solutions, make sure in your User Prefs that you set "On Timecode Break" to "Warn After Capture". Just thinking off the top of my head.

You can always just use Cinema Tools, which is really fast and easy to do. It's not a workflow I've ever had to use. I think Ken Stone's site has a really good tutorial on Cinema Tools and pulldown.

And I'll assume there's no other format shot on the same tape? Are you using a deck or the camera for capture? Either way, I'd try the other, just to see what happens.

Point is, it's not a universal issue, but an issue just the same.
