when you capture 24p in final cut pro 5. Do you use the dv ntsc preset? Or do you have to make a copy of preset and change it from interlaced to progressive in settings?

any help is appreciated thank you

yea ive been reading a bunch of stuff but i cant find the right way to capture it.

http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/FCP5_HD_and_Broadcast_Formats.pdf

page 64 i read that but still confused, Well this is waht im doing. Im filming in 24p on a dvx100b. Im using 24p not 24pa. Well when i go to capture the 24p in fcp5, Can i use the standard dv ntsc 48khz setting or do i have to make a copy of that and change capture settings to 24 frames a second and progressive. Ive been capturing the 24p footage with the dv ntsc 48khz preset, it only says that i have to remove the pulldown if i captured it like that? So I guess i can remove the pulldown to 24p and all the 24p footage that was captured it 29.97 will be fine?
Also i could not find where it says how to capture 24p footage in manual or anything. I want to know the proper full quality way to capture 24p footage with fcp. what should my capture settings be to capture it?

thanks if you can help me and answer my question directly to here. appreciate your time

Remove Advanced Pulldown and/or Duplicate Frames During Capture From FireWire
Sources: Some camcorders, such as the Panasonic DVX100 or Varicam, can record
alternate frame rates within a standard frame rate. For example, the DVX100 can
record 23.98 fps video within 29.97 fps by adding an advanced 2:3:3:2 pulldown. The
Varicam can record multiple frame rates, such as 23.98 fps (720p24) by adding
redundant frames within a 59.94 fps (720p60) video signal. When this option is
selected, Final Cut Pro removes the redundant fields or frames during capture. If this
option is not selected, all the redundant frames are captured. You can remove
redundant frames later by choosing Tools > Remove Advanced Pulldown.
For more information about working with multiple frame rate video formats in
Final Cut Pro, see Working With High Definition and Broadcast Formats (choose HD and
Broadcast Formats from the Help menu.)

i found this in the manual, when u film with 24p do you have to select this option or is it just for 24Pa? I cant find anywhere that clears this up. can someone that knows clear this up for me. thanks

DVX100 24pA footage should always be captured at 29.97 because that's what's on the tape. When a user wants to cut at 23.98 they need to properly remove the 2:3:3:2 pulldown introduced by the DVX100 during filming. The DVX100 flags these extra frames and embeds these flags into the Firewire data stream. FCP can read these flags back during ingest and conform the 29.97 pulldown footage back to the 23.98 captured by the camera. That is what the Remove Advance Pulldown from 2:3:3:2 sources checkbox in the capture settings is for. But in order to do this properly, the FPS setting in FCP must be set at 29.97 to give FCP the full firewire data stream and allow it to properly recognize the flags and remove the Advance pulldown frames.

If you set the capture FPS at 23.98, FCP will randomly delete frames to get from 29.97 to 23.98 but they will not be the correct frames. You'll wind up with a 23.98 file that looks odd during playback from FCP because the 2:3:3:2 interlaced pulldown frames are still there along with randomly missing progressive frames. This has become the number one issue plaguing FCP users with DVX100 footage who want to cut at 23.98 and has resulted in a lot of confusion. I've hoped to lobby Apple on this issue so that they might include a warning pop-up in FCP giving notice that 23.98 FPS capture will result in improperly digitized DVX100 footage but haven't made any headway and Panasonic hasn't been able to either- maybe you can help with that.

I know it seems counterintuitive that one would use 29.97 as the capture frame rate in order to ingest 23.98 footage but that's how it must be done because of the way the format is recorded to tape.

noah, im still confused a bit, im using 24p and not 24pa. You prob still have to capture it as 29.97, but my question is should i use the dv ntsc 48khz preset? or do i have to change the compression from interlaced to progressive in the advanced settings under compressor?

if u can answer this question i would appreciate it cause i can find the answer for this part, thanks
