Capturing 24P footage shot with AG-DVX100B in PPro

Guys,

I completed my first film project using Panasonic AG-DVX100B. On capturing the footage with Premiere Pro 2.0 (I have a 30 day tryout) I see flickering for the panned shots. Also, the edges on the actors are blurry and the colors dont look the same (dull'ish) as when viewed with the camera itself.

I specified the DV-24P (48 Hz) setting for capture and used the same camera for transferring the DV footage.

What am I doing wrong?

Also, can I use my Sony consumer cam (1CCD) for transferring the footage again if I have to (as the Panasonic was a rental and I cant afford to rent it again)

Thanks,
Taj

Hi Taj,
First of all, you should be able to use your one-chipper to re-capture from tape. I do it all the time.

When you shot your footage, did you use the 24P or the 24PA setting? This could make a difference. If all your settings look correct, then the flickering or strobing may be caused by simply panning too fast. There's a limit to how fast you can pan and this becomes even more important with a slower framerate like 24fps. This is true even with film. Barry Green explains this well in his book on the DVX. I highly recommend getting a copy.

As for the soft edges and dull colors, we would have to see a frame grab to comment. Just be aware that the camera displays are not calibrated references. Also, the latitude of the DVX can give the appearence of lower contrast; especially if you are comparing it to your 1-chip footage. But greater latitude is a good thing. It gives you more flexibiity for achieving the look you want in your NLE.

The DVX also has lots of adjustments that influence the appearance of the recorded image. Again, Barry's book gives lots of good info on this.
