capturing 16mm footage

Trying to capture old (1950s) 16mm footage in FCP 6, from Mini-DV tape. Captured footage is playing back too fast (in timeline and viewer). I'm assuming 16mm frame rate is 24 fps, but it's old home movies, and not sure if the camera was hand cranked (variable frame rate) or not.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Do you have a variable frame rate projector you can retransfer with? 24 fps is the more common speed but 18fps was also not unusual- especially if it's silent footage. Hand cranked footage is fairly easy to spot because the exposure will waver as the speed runs fast and slow.

If you have already gone through the process of a cheap 'telecine' to Mini-DV, you could always change the speed in FCP.

Command + J, type in 80%, uncheck frame blending.

Noah, think you may be right cause the footage does display exposure problems... Never occurred to me to change speed. Thanks, Jason.
