Captured without pulldown

Total brain fart -

I captured my 24pa footage with the Anamorphic setting from the drop down menu, rather than with the Advanced Pulldown setting, with anamorphic simply checked in the capture preferences. What can I do now that the footage is all captured and edited? Should I recapture at least the clips that I have in my timeline? And would this maybe explain why my stills shutter and flicker when cross fading with the video?

Stupid and out of time,

Robert

P.S., I should mention that I'm editing in FCP 5 in a 29.98 timeline, since I have multiple formats in the piece. I should also mention that I have a screening of the video on Sunday! Please help!

I agree, you definitely want to use Cinema Tools for the reverse telecine. It should be a snap. Depending on whether or not you overwrite the existing file or create a new one, you may have to reconnect the clips in your timeline.

Since you are editing in a 29.97 timeline, you'll end up having to render the 23.98 clips.

Thanks, I try that. Will I need to do it on a clip by clip basis since I have other types of clips in the timeline?

Oy. Thanks. Will doing this alter the timeline in anyway, such as length of clips, timing of edits, etc?

Shouldn't he just apply "remove advanced pulldown" under "tools"?

Won't using Cinema Tools just do a frame rate conversion rather than throwing away frames as if it were converting 29.97 footage that hasn't been tagged with specific frames to throw away?

IMHO, you should not use cinema tools, but highlight the clips you want and use the "remove advanced pulldown" option under the tools menu bar.

Unless I'm missing something this is exactly what it is for. Does cinema tools apply standard telecine or advanced? Standard would throw away the wrong frames.

Anyway even if cinema tools is a fine idea, which it may be, this is easier, and designed to do exactly the same thing as remove advanced pulldown on capture without ever leaving FCP and going to another app in the suite.

I'd make your 23.98 sequence. Preview your 29.97 clips in the viewer, then when you want one, drag it on to the sequence, then with the clip highlighted, apply the remove advanced pulldown option.

This does sound much easier. Thanks.

Blaine and SMP, thoughts?
If you can make it work for you, I'd say go for it. I tried it on a clip I knew was shot 24PA but captured without the pulldown removal. I had to double click on the clip to put it in the viewer. Then I used the Remove Advanced Pulldown from the Tools menu. It looked like it was going to work but I got an error message that said: Break in Advanced Pulldown cadence (pattern) found near t.

I tried it on a couple of clips and it was the same. I couldn't remove the Advance Pulldown that way. I then tried it with Cinema Tools and it worked like a charm.

It still looks like you can only do one clip at a time since I had to have the clip in the Viewer to have access the Remove Advance Pulldown choice. I'd say try it this way, though and if it works you're in great shape. If not, then use Cinema Tools.

Jack Daniel Stanley, thanks for the tip - it worked great.

I did need to open each clip individually in the viewer and then choose the pulldown option in tools - so that took a bit of time, and then rendering everything, but it's done now!

I'm still having problems with a couple of my stills jittering on cross fade, but that seems to be another issue (although other stills now cross fade flawlessly, so maybe it was related). But I have found that when the gods gives you a jittery cross fade, they're usually telling you to stop using so many cross fades and take the time to make the straight cut work.

Anyway, thanks again for the tip. This will all somehow magically be ready to screen on Sunday!

Robert
