captured footage organization

i'm having a very hard time with this...

it's bad enough not having a thumbnail view of any of the footage so that you have to add (in my case) m2t files to the timeline to see what they are but then after you go through this laborious method of ascertaining what you're working with, then you can't move or rename the file even after you take it OFF the timeline because the file is apparently STILL IN $#%!*ING USE until you completely close down vegas!?

is this really the process i have to endure every time i want to figure out what a file is and then rename/move it accordingly?

really?

or am i missing something small and trivial that will make me feel foolish for having made this post? if so, i would love to hear it as i don't think i have the patience for video editing if this is what is entails...

There are buttons over the media pool. One of them is lightning. Clicking that will remove anything that's not on the timeline from the project. Do that; click Save; your clips should be free.

Are you sure you're in thumbnail mode in the media pool?

that worked! thank you.

unfortunately it still takes a very long time to go through every shot, putting them in the media pool one by one then removing them with thor's lightning bolt then renaming them, then moving them to the appropriate folder then on to the next file...but i guess that's just the reality of the situation.

You can do all your renaming in the Project Media window. You can organize using the Media Bins to the left, or the Media Manager.

Also, taking steps toward organization while shooting will eliminate the need for a lot of this. You should keep a Shot Log.

I rename each file before I even open Vegas to start editing. I use my script supervisor's notes, as well as the slate and name each file corresponding to the scene/take number. That way, while editing, I can review the SS's notes and look at the file names and know exactly what I'm looking for.
