Captured footage looks bad.

I have footage that I recorded at 24pa.

I am using FCP 5.1 to digitize this footage, using 29.97.

The footage looks crisp and clear in the window as it is being played, but when I capture it it just looks a little... off, blurry. Not just during playback, but frame by frame also.

Any ideas?

If your going to be recording using 24pa then you want to capture your footage to be edited in a 24p timeline. So go into your easy setup and change the pre-set to DV-NTSC 24p (23.98) Advanced Pulldown Removal. This way, your footage will have the split frames removed so that your footage looks a bit sharper as well as having a true 24 progressive frames to edit with.

You might want to check this out if you have some other questions as well. http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/24p_in_FCP_nattress.html

My easy setups don't offer DV-NTSC 24p (23.98) Advanced Pulldown Removal. Hmm. What did I do wrong? Can I just trash my FCP prefs and have them pop up?

when you go into your easy set ups, is the "show all" box to the right of the menu bar checked? If it isn't make sure to click that so a check mark appears and then open up the menu bar and scroll down to see if you can find it.

THe player in FCP is a proxy image. Look at the captures source using Quictime pro to see if it looks good. Make sure you have High Quality checked off in Quictime to see best quality. Keep in mind this option is only for display purposes.
