captured clips

after logging and capturing clips, do you have to export them as .mov files to your hard drive to be able to back them up on an external hard drive?

another way to pose this question is this way: where do the files actually go when you capture them? I can only find them inside the browser of my my FCP project. I went looking for them inside my Mac HD and found nothing. (but that doesn't make sense since they've gotta be stored somewhere..?)

i'm sure this is a simple stupid question so have mercy on me...

they are in the capture scratch folder. Go to Final Cut Pro > System settings or Audio/video setting I can't remeber but in there you will see the location of your scratch disk. By deafult it is located under Documents > Final Cut Pro Documents > Capture Scratch, This folder also holds render files and auto save files ect.

I looked in the doc>FCPdocs>capturescratch and NOTHING is in there...

so if those clips don't exist, how come I can open and close it and no clips go offline.... And i've captured over a hundred clips?

thanks for responding.
