Capture Settings???

I've scoured these boards and THINK I'm starting to understand capture settings in Final Cut but could use some help...

I shot in F5 mode (24P not 24Pa) with the anamorphic adapter. From what I've read, this means I should Capture my footage at 29.97 with the Anamorphic box checked in the Capture Settings window. Right?

And what about the "Compressor"? It defaults to DV/DVCPRO - NTSC. I'd imagine that I want to capture my footage with NO compression and 100% Quality but then Final Cut craps out and tells me that I have "dropped frames".

Once I'm finally able to capture my footage do I want to edit in a 29.97 sequence or a 23.98 sequence?

I'm working on a Dual 1G G4 with almost a Gig of Ram. I'm trying to capture to a 250G harddrive connected w/ a firewire. Someone please help. I've spent 2 days trying to figure this out!

Re: Capture Settings???

Ok, here is what you are going to want to do.
First of all you captured in 24p which means that no you do not have to edit in 24 or 23.98. You really don't have to think about it other than that it is the same thing as your typical 30p or 60i capture settings. 24p basically allows that 24 fps look on a 29.97 tape or timeline unlike 24pa in which you have to remove the dummy frames by using the pulldown removal in FCP allowing you to edit exactly like film in a 23.98 fps timeline. This is best if your final output media is film.

Ok, so you have your camera hooked up via firewire and you are setting your capture settings. You have it right up to the compressor point. You need to figure out what type of compression works best for you. I usually use uncompressed 8-bit because I have the HD space and it honestly looks the best. DV/DVPRO - NTSC is not a horrible compressor being that you are capturing from a DV source. Try it our see what you think will work best for you.

What are your scratch discs set to? Are they set to your firewire drive?

What version of FCP are you using? Make sure you REPAIR PERMISSIONS!! Many people do not realize that repairing your permissions on your drive fixes many issues! Please answer these questions so I can help you further with the crashing problems. Good luck..!

Re: Capture Settings???

Kyle, you rock!!! Thank you!

Ideally, I'd like the highest quality (least compressed) source footage as possible. We have about 4-7 hours of footage to capture for a 7-12 min. short doc. I will try the uncompressed 8-bit setting and see how it goes.

My scratch disk is set to my external firewire drive.

I'm using Final Cut 4.0 and I have no idea what "repair permissions" are. Where are they and how do I fix them?

Again, thanks for your help!

Re: Capture Settings???

Ok, here is what you have to do to repair permissions. Go to Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility
Click on your main Harddrive in the Disk Utility and in the submenu there should be a button "Repair Disk Permissions" Go ahead and let that run until it is done and try FCP again. See if it crashes. If it still does I would download all the updates for it. Updates really seem to help out with this kind of stuff...Let me know if those two things help you...talk to you soon :) How fast is your computer BTW? Computer Specs??
