I've read that for problem-free capture, it's best to skip the first 10 seconds of a tape. Does that mean the timecode should start 10 seconds into the tape, or at the beginning but you just don't have any footage you need on the first 10 seconds?
Time code starts at the beginning every time you start to record.
The problem is if there is a tiem code break (if you havent configured it correctly or haven't used the Rec CHeck button) then there will be a change in the time code numbers right between the two clips which can confuse any editor. By starting the capture a little way in you avoid this problem. If you slate and have a moment before action it shouldn't be a problem.
I think what you might be talking about is FCP needs a little time to pre roll the tape and get it running up to speed... kind of. Anyway, if you try to capture right at the beginning of the tape FCP will shut off. It's best to not try to capture anything before 5 or 10 seconds on the tape... but, yes... make sure you start rolling timecode at the front of the tape.
Not sure what Scott is talking about. My TC doesn't change everytime I start to record. Always stays counting forward. Yes, if you miss a frame at the end of your record then you run the chance of breaking code and starting over at zero.
You can avoid this by not powering your camera off when you are recording. Stop recording first... THEN power down. I've never had a TC break with the DVX because of this... I HAVE had TC breaks because I wasn't thinking and let the camera roll past the end of the last clip when reviewing!! I'll tell you though... that will only happen ONCE!

I have had problems trying to capture it 5 seconds on the tape.
Does anyone know the exact gap we need to leave?
I have never had this problem when capturing on the PC.
The capture now doesn't work either. I have to leave a few second before it starts recording.
Before FCP-HD it used to work fine. It just went nutts with FCP-HD.
Anyway, since I always leave a lot of space at the beginning of the tape, I don't have much to worry about.
