Capture problem: Different frame rate encoding on tape (24p & 24pa)

Hi,

I usually record to tape with my dvx100 using 24pa, but sometimes the quick setup dial was switched accidentally resulting in a different frame encoding, like 24p for example.

Everything is recorded in 29.97fps on mini-dv, we all know that, making apparently no difference b/w 24p and 24pa.

But of course, when i'm trying to capture this footage through FCP, i can't always remove the advanced pulldown because there's a few clips that have been recorded with 24p instead of 24pa.

Questions:
- How can you detect the different encoding on tape, whether it's 24p or 24pa?
- Can you get FCP to create a new clip (at least stop) the capture for those sections of the tape where I have something different than 24pa?
- If nothing like that is possible, how do you solve this problem?

Thanks!

I'm having the same problem.

I have most of my footage footage shot in 24PA, but a few clips in 24P. So editing is now a mess because the 24P (29.97) footage looks terrible on the 23.98 timeline with the rest.

I think the viewfinder of the camera will tell you what mode it was shot in.

I have been looking over the web, without finding a solution to this. Maybe there's some plugins that could help with that. I have also posted this problem onto the apple forums. I'll let you know if I find a solution elsewhere.

In the meantime, it's obvious others have had this problem. Of course the problem could be eliminated in the future, by changing all the dvx100 presets to be the same... but in the meantime how do we handle different frame encoding on tape?

We're desperate for a solution!!

You can change the presets to anything you want- just save init. To check footage in the camera, toggle the display on VCR mode and it will show if it's 24p or 24pA.

Within FCP- 24pA is 4 frames progressive and 1 frame interlaced. 24pA is 2 frames interlaced, three frames progressive.

And of course only 24pA will automatically remove interlaced frames in FCP. 24p standard requires the use of Cinema Tools to remove the pulldown. Explained here:

and on my DVD. :bath:
