Capture or Rip Video from DVD for Edit

Hi,

A client gave me his footage on a DVD, playable in a regular DVD player. They want me to edit it in final cut but I can't figure out how to pull the video (VOB) files into FCP with audio. There are "Video_TS" and "Audio_TS" folders on the DVD but the "Audio TS" folder is empty. If I play a .vob file with quicktime there isn't any audio.

Any suggestions? In the past when I had time, I'd connect my portable DVD player to my mini-dv, transfer the vid to mini-dv tape and then capture the video from mini-dv in FCP. Unfortunately, I don't have the time or access to that equipment right now.

Thanks,
James

As DVD's are typically copy protected there is no direct support for editing them in FCP. I'd suggest a google for rip tools on OSX. I think Handbrake and Cinematize are the preferred one.

handbrake is nice but mpeg streamclip is the way to go, it's much easier to use. If i remember correctly, handbrake only makes mpeg4 and mpeg streamclip can do a number of conversions.

Hi,

Try copying the vob files to you hdd and renaming them to the file extension ".mpg" it should work.
