Capture live video?

I've got a question about capturing video but NOT timecode.

A student of mine has a miniDVD recorder and wants to digitize into FCP. I'm having him pass the signal through RCA inputs on DV deck and the deck is converting it to Firewire/DV signal.

However, FCP is waiting for a timecode to pass through the firewire to begin recording. Is there a way to turn this off? I'd like FCP to just begin recording (without waiting for timecode - cuz it ain't gonna happen).

Just throw a tape in the camera and record while it's capturing.

non-controllable device is the best thing to do!!
