Capture from computers DVD player

How would I capture video/audio into final cut pro from a DVD spinning in my computers disk slit. That question sounds wierder than it is. I'm simply trying to capture something from a DVD using the same computers DVD player. Is that possible? What settings in log and capture please/thanks?

Okay I'm pretty sure I can't do that... However, can I run from a DVD player to a deck to my computer, and do a capture now? WITHOUT having a miNI DV tape in the deck? Essentially just using my Deck to convert the info through the firewire? Or do I have to record in onto the mini DV and then capture it onto the disk? Thanks

You should be able to use a deck as a passthrough. I used to use my GL2 with FCP to capture from a VHS deck. It went:

VHS Composite cables into GL2 into FCP, but i forget how i did it completly.

if you can get a dazzle bridge, youll be fine, but you can also just rip individual scenes from the DVD into DV/NTSC using software and your mac only.

Using the deck as a pass through should work fine. Just realize there may be a degrading of quality because of it. Might not be too noticable, but will likely be at least some.

Preferable would be to get a stand alone DVD Recorder unit that has DV In and DV Out. Then you could go straight from that to FCP and use the capture now option. But doesn't look like that's quite your option.

As for capturing it on the computer itself, yes you can do that. You essentially then would be ripping it. There is a variety of software options for doing this such as MPEG Streamclip and Cinematize. Note this is illegal if you are dealing with a copyrighted disc. I don't care what the purposes, I agree with others that have often posted here, breaking the law is breaking the law.

Also, if you go down just a few postings in the FCP sub thread you'll find this exact thing discussed. Searching on this forum can be a bit tricky, as many have found, but at least scan the first couple of pages.

cheers.

I think I'll go the three piece option. I've never successfully used any of those ripping softwares. I can always only get about five random seconds off of any DVD because they are the only VOB files available.

Thats true...i like handbrake alot, since it allows me to capture just specific chapters, which makes my job alot easier here at the office, but it only rips to iPod, atleast the version i have, i would like to rip to DV/NTSC if possible.

someone "hacked" handbrake to dumb it down for iPods (instant handbrake)... but if you get the original version (0.7.1) you can use any installed codec.
