Capture from analog sources

I feel comfortable editing with Ppro CS6 but capturing is kind of strange. I come from FCP7. I can't seem to figure out hw to get anything other than uncompressed with Ppro capture. Do I need to use a different tool? I have media from tape and from a house router that I need to use in projects. How can I pick a codec other than uncompressed? I know this is a nob question but the Lynda tutorial doesn't cover it. Only capture from a camera via firewire.

Are you trying to capture in real time, or trying to import existing files?

If the files already exist, you can use the Media Browser to locate the files, then use "import" withing Premiere Pro.

If the Import is more complicated, you can use Prelude. What you want to use in Prelude is "Ingest."

There are a number of options for the source and teh types of files to Ingest, including Canon, Sony HDV, etc. Then you can either copy to a new location, or Transcode to a variety of codecs.

Let me know what you find out. I am just getting to know CS6 so these are just suggestions ...

good luck!

I need to capture from an SDI router, and from DVCpro tape deck via SDI. For some projects I have to upconvert anamorphic SD video that is on DVCpro tape to work in HD projects. The AJA LHi does a pretty good job at doing this. Do I need to use a different tool other than Premiere Pro? I hope not. That seems strange. I have used Prelude for P2 and XDcam transcoding them to ProRes and that works well.

Ok, so you do need Cature. Although some people use ther word "Capture" with Prelude, it is appareently only for disk based media.

In PP, does it make a difference how you create your project? First there are two choices on teh capture I think when you make a new project: DV, or HDV.

Then it asks you for the Sequence presets. If you select different Sequence presets, does that make a difference in the size or encoding of the projects?

If all else fails, you could use Prelude to Ingest the clips Captured with Premiere to create a more compact set of clips to work with.

Sorry, just learning myself ... Good luck!

Talked to AJA and I guess no codecs other than uncompressed and DVCpro are available for capture. That's kind of a bummer. I need more/better options than that. Downloaded AJA VTR Xchange application and that works but it adds another step. Now I can capture to any available codec on my system. I'm assuming Adobe doesn't want to pay for licensing to write to these other codecs like ProRes and DNxHD.

I saw this at the Adobe site. It looks like Adobe doesn't create any of the presets for the codecs for the capture devices?
In Premiere Pro, select File >New > Sequence.

In the Available Presets area of the New Sequence dialog box, select the SDI or component preset that matches the format of your source footage. Premiere Pro does not provide these presets. Manufacturers of SDI cards, component capture cards, and other devices provide these presets. The presets must be installed with those cards and devices.

Type a name in the Sequence Name box. Then click OK.I saw on another forum that some plugins from AJA are listed on their web site as "Coming soon." I think including the Lhi, but not some older cards.

You might try the Prelude Ingest on the uncompressed files after you Capture them, along with a Transcode. That also adds another step in a sense. But Prelude allows you to do Rough Cuts and add markers, then do the Injest and transfer directly to Premiere.

So the "extra step" might be more liek beginning editing in Premiere, so that you are accomplising some trimming, sequencing, and rough edits to the new codec, and don't have to convert all of the clips, only what you are using?

Sorry, probably shouldn't have jumped in on this one! Nothing I have experience in yet in CS6.

Good luck!

Cheers,
Michael

Let AJA know.

Or do some research and find out of Blackmagic or Bluefish hardware offers other options.

I called AJA. They said it's a Adobe thing not AJA's decision to not use available codecs that you have installed on your computer. Here we go.

I have a Decklink card at home and its basically the same deal. No codecs available other than uncompressed or DVCpro.

It looks like there are new plugin drivers available from AJA for CS6 Mac and maybe Windows:

http://www.aja.com/en/articles/171/

http://www.aja.com/en/support/kona/mac/kona-lhi/

It says "Mac and Windows" in the announcement in teh first link, but on the IHi page I only see a Mac CS6 download

I don't have any way to test them, and don't want to install them witout a need.

Maybe something teh lower level customer service reps weren't aware of? Maybe ...

Cheers!

That is the software I'm using now.

I don't know much about AJA...but I use Matrox Mini for laptop and Matrox Mojito Max for my Mac Pro...it Matrox offers multiple ways to capture...including prores. via using HDMI.

I have new work flow for Premiere Pro CS6 using AJA Kona card for capturing via HDMI, SDI, Component or Composite.

AJA has a capture tool called AJA VTR Xchange. It's a basic capture program that allows you to pick any codec you have installed on your system. I used it today and it works as it should. It even will batch capture from a RS422 serial connection from a DVCpro deck or whatever you have that uses this type on deck control.
Then I import the clips into Premiere Pro and edit.
It adds one more step but it's a small one so I can live with it. I don't understand why Adobe doesn't let you use the codecs you have on your system with there capture tool but thats the way it is.
Blackmagic also has a software tool called Media Express that works very similarly for their decklink cards.

Cheers!

It's probably copyright laws between Apple and Adobe. Remember they don't really like each other. Kind of like the same with Sony and Avid too. I guess if had FCP doing so well for so many years..The fat heads get arrogant. Till you slip up "Cough Cough-- FCPX." Watch out for Smoke to be the next major player.

That makes sense but why can’t I use DNxHD? The codec is free to the consumer with a download. In the manual it says Cineform is available with a $300 license.

DNxHD is a AVID codec...pretty much isolated by itself..especially when prores 422 was used more by the marketplace. Cineform is just third party codec that has less problems in scrubbing your footage. I've used them before but Prores 422 pretty much did the same thing.
Have you tried bring your DNxHD in FCP7, then output it as a prores 422 to adobe? I hate workarounds but it is what it is. Have you used Automatic duck? They use good converters and it's free. Since the owners of Automatic Duck is now working for Adobe.

When I first started using Premiere I would use FCP7 to capture because of the lack of codec choices in Ppro. I don’t use DNxHD but I would if I could. The work around is ok for now. I just have to get used to it. Most of the time I use P2 media but during sweeps I need to get footage from the router that is national stuff that I use for topical promos or news clips that get come in as a feed. Things are changing so hopefully I can just get the footage clips from a SAN instead of playing them out from a router.
