Capture Emergency

Using the DVX100A, I shot one tape's worth of footage for an interview, and used the scene file F6 to film at the 24PA setting.

I have tried to capture the footage using:

1. Sony HVR-M1U
2. Sony DSR-11
3. Directly from my DVX100A

No matter what I do, the footage looks very pixelated (interlaced?) around the edges of the person being interviewed. It is definitely noticeable.

At this point, I don't really care whether I keep the footage at 29.97 or 24p with advanced pulldown. I would be completely fine just taking in the footage at 29.97 and keeping it that way. I only shot 24pa because I wanted some experience with the workflow. But now, I really just want to get this footage looking crisp. Period.

Any ideas as to which part of my setup may be resulting in this image? I've tried almost every Easy Setup and Capture Setting, as well as reverse telecine in Compressor and Cinema Tools.

Is it just a bad tape? The thing that really gets me is that the monitor playback and playback on my DVX look perfectly fine.

Any thoughts? I'm really in a bind, here.

Thanks.

Yeah...

I think you really need to spend some time reading this forum and the stickies above. That would answer your question.

WHY you shot 24pA??? Because you were familiar with the workflow???? What does that mean?

You have any ideas what your RT settings are set to?

You have any idea the size of the image in your canvas window?

Are you intending to watch this final on a TV? on the Web?

Are you in 23.98 now?

Are you editing on a 23.98 sequence?

Blind isn't what comes to mind. But I AM... can't look over your shoulder from here.

But I suggest setting your canvas to 100% and your RT to HIGH. And then answer all the questions above.

My canvas window has been set to 100% and the RT is high.

As far as the sequence settings are concerned, I have tried importing the tape as 29.97 and playing back in a 29.97 sequence. I have tried importing it with advance pulldown removal and playing back in a 23.98 sequence. Both have the same problem.

I suppose I could also note that the wall behind the interviewer is a highly saturated red. Is it possible that this could result in the pixelating between his face/shirt and the background?

I have done extensive reading in this forum regarding 24pa, and I guess what I'm trying to say is after troubleshooting the possible issues with shooting and capturing in that format, I am currently at the conclusion that my problem has nothing to do with shooting and capturing in 24pa, but with another factor.

Ultimately, this piece will end up on the web, but even in a small Flash or Quicktime window, this problem will be noticeable.

Well, when you said pixelated (interlaced) it would seem to me you don't know the difference. You cannot have interlaced frames in 24fps timeline if you did everything else correct.

I'd export a section of the video to your compression standards and take a look at it. Maybe some CCing will help. Either way -- red is REALLY bad and will 'bleed' creating a mess.

Maybe you'd be willing to post a shot of what you are seeing?

Yeah, turns out the red was the culprit after all. I just threw on a filter, made some color adjustments, and now the lines around him are perfectly crisp.
