Capture Darker than Preview ?

Hi,
I'm having a problem in Vegas 6.0 similar to another one found on this forum:
I had notice during capture that when the video was playing, everything was fine. when I hit record however, the image instantly darkened slightly. This leads me to think the problem may lie in the capture settings, but as they were default, I assumed all would be fine. I never had this problem with Vegas 4.

When capturing the "capture preview" window displays the content much darker than it does when just 'play'-ing, or when viewed in the timeline.

Here's my question...does anyone know what's causing this...?
The reason I ask:

I'm not sure what footage is the 'good' or 'correct' footage from the DVX100a I'm using. The footage shown while capturing is darker, the colours pop more, but that same footage when playing in the same window looks brighter.

After the dark-capture, the same captured footage appears 'brighter' in the timeline.

any ideas?

I think it's just a fluke of the preview window. What you catpure is what it is -- the 1s and 0s are taken directly from the tape and wrapped in an .avi file. There's no transcoding done at capture; it's just a bit-for-bit transfer of what's on the tape, so there's nothing that can really go wrong, as far as color, luminance, etc..

What you see when you get it into the timeline is what it should look like.

Thanks guys - It certainly seemed to just be a "fluke" but I wanted to run it by you.

David - thanks for the quick reply - I spent a good amount of time searching through various forum posts, and yours have been an excellent, well-written source of info. thx.

Thanks John, good to know. I figured it wasn't anything big, but I try to be extra-careful about the small things w video.
