capture card? real time with CC? PP2?

I'm going to be getting PP2 sometimes soon and I would like to get a capture/edit card soon.

I heard and read a little bit that some cards can have realtime editing with multiple tracks and color correction. So does that mean I can view and play back everything normally even with magic bullet applied?

This is the main reason I want to get a card. mainly to speed up my edits and color corrrecting.

I only know about matrox and canopus. but it looked like matrox isn't compatible to a lot of systems out there. What else are my options out there? I only know of canopus or matrox. Any recomendations?

I've been searching around on the threads and found some useful information on capture cards but I never really found out if it truely makes things real time or not.

Thanks a bunch in advance,
Paolo

It seems that all of the NLE developers are moving away from hardware acceleration in favor of software. They are now getting much better performance from faster CPU's and GPU's [graphic cards].

I'd suggest waiting to purchase an accelerator card until after you have had the chance to test PPro2 so that you'll have first had knowledge of where you think the software could use some help and be in a better position to determine if a particular Matrox or Canopus card will actually help you. It really adds another layer of complexity trying to deal with third party crads compatibility etc..

If you are goign to be editing SD then you'll probably be surprised at how much realtime perfomance you get from PPro natively. If you want to edit HD then there are many other factors that effect realtime performance that the lower end accelerator cards don't really help you with anyway.

Thanks for the reply Chucks, yea I actually have the tryout version of PP2 and everything seems good except when I use any CC in magic bullet. it really slows things down like crazy for me and rendering times are still insanely long. I have a pretty fast computer too. Here are my specs.

amd athlon64 x2 4400
3 gigs of corsair ram
nvidia 7800gt
msi nforce4 board
and a raptor HD for my main drive with another 300 gig backup drive

Is there any way to tweak PP to take full advantage of my system? I heard in the new AE you can do that by putting some of the rendering thru the video card.

I will mostly only be doing SD work for now. I don't plan on moving up to HD any time soon.

I guess i should check if the RexRTPro is compatible to my compy.

thanks.

As much as I like Canopus, once they started developing Eduis the relationship with Adobe went to crap so the support for the drivers for PPro isn't very good. I wouldn't reccomend getting a DVRexRTPro in your system.

You have a fast enough system that you really shouldn't need any hardware acceleration.

Regarding color correcting with Magic Bullet, I don't think there's much you can do to speed that up. AE7 takes advantage of the better OpenGL performance of the newer graphics cards. But to get the benefit you'd probably need to upgrade your graphics card to the Quadro workstation series. However, depending on what your doing I'm not sure how much faster it would be.

Also if you use more than your NLE for post and are considering the Adobe Production Suite a graphics accelerator card might actually hinder many of the productivity gains you'd get with the tight integration between PPro, AE and Photoshop.

Latest version Magic Bullets and for that matter PremPro 2 make effective use of the GPU on graphics cards. I noted a huge improvement just by upgrading the graphics card.

NB: In the case of MBs they only can use the GPU function on Nvidea chip based graphic cards.

Realtime - I look at it this way. Rendering is part of the deal (even in Photoshop with one frame) so expect to live with it a bit in a NLE with multiple frames. The accelerated effects now available as I mention above make previews much , much quicker and some are actually realtime. Heavy duty effects will not be RT and sometimes its the combination of effects that take the time.

Note: In a Professional Post production suite using Inferno and Flame systems - rendering is still part of the action and that is on hardware with immense processing power.

Whatever - it is still a hell of a lot faster than sending it to the fx unit at the film lab.

thanks a lot of the responses guys, I appreciate it. I love these forums, although I think I'm starting to spend more time on here than I do on my NLE...booo for me.
