Capture Boards?

Looking to capture a feature to my computer to edit with Premiere Pro, and just want a straight, honest answers as to what the best capture card (resonably priced) would be. My old boss uses a Canopus, and that seems to do alright. I keep hearing various Matrox numbers thrown around on this forum, too. I plan to shoot the feature 24pa for easier transfer to film if the opportunity arrises. Also, I'm dirt poor, and anything over $300 is going to be a big stretch. Would it even be an improvement over a Firewire, which to this point has worked alright.

Re: Capture Boards?

any firewire port you have is going to do the same exact thing, and give you the same exact file. the only difference will be the codecs that you can use (like if you have a matrox or pinnical, or avid, or whatever system, you can use their codec, which may or may not give you advantages over another codec for export, or redering and editing) some of the cards come with different capture utilities, but really premiere pro will do anything you want during the capture through any standard firewire port.  just use the one on your pc if its got one. or get any chep card.. it doesnt really matter. its a digital transfer. ive got a matrox rtx100 extreme. and i capture through it , and use the matrox codec, but i could just use the regular firewire port, and then use the matrox or other  codec for editing, and export.

There is the new Osmosis card you could look into. You just put your camera next to your computer, 10-15 minutes, and your footage is on your computer. Really good. I don't know who makes it though. 8)

Well, the earlier version of the Osmosis card you did. But the new one I think just requires the camera to be on.
