Caprica - The new series

If you guys haven't seen Fridays(2/26) episode(5) yet, watch it! They really got some momentum going with that episode. I feel that now with characters/conflict having been intro'ed and basic groundwork laid, we are in for some badass $h!t. I really dug the Neo/Tamara allusion towards the end. Looking forward to the next 14 episodes......

EDIT: Many spoilers here. Watch the show from the pilot, it's nice.

Way into this show. I saw a reference to an upcoming plot line involving daniel graystone being harassed by the company he stole the processor from. That sounds kind of boring... but bsg had a few boring plot lines as well.

It's pretty obvious that STO is completely wonky, so hopefully they don't go about pretending like they're fooling anyone. The viewers, at this point, aren't thinking 'Oh geeze maybe STO is a realy nice organization!' It's very obvious they're crazy.

They might have gone a bit off the deep end with the adama girl's character when she started shooting people and acting like an action star. I really preferred it when she was just young, scared, and cagey: that makes her more dangerous.

Zoey is great but her reasons for going to Gemanon don't make any sense. Obviously the original zoey made a mistake by attempting to go there herself, so why does virtual zoey want to make the same mistake? They've made V-zoey to real for me to believe she's just a computer program, she's obviously thinking.

Great show. BSG had a lot of the same issues, but was still spectacular.

Bumping - This is possibly my favorite show of all time. Especially if you're into BSG please watch this.

I don't think I'd go so far as to say Caprica is going to be an all time favorite, as its first season is good but not nearly the amazing ride that season one of BSG was. Still though, this is a damn good show in many ways. Now begins long rant with many spoilers for both Caprica and BSG:

I hate to nitpick a show I'm enjoying, but I think the biggest problem is that CAPRICA has too many story threads dangling. There's the Cylon Zoey - Daniel Greystone plotline (which should really be the main crux of the show), the Adama father/son/uncle stuff, which ties to the the Tauron mafia stuff, the New Cap City V-world stuff, the STO plot (2 STO threads actually, since there is the Sister Willow cell and the Barnabas cell that Lacy is trying to work with). Personally, I'm finding the Adama family stuff, the Tauron culture and mafia elements, and the New Cap City exploration of virtual reality the most compelling aspects of the show.

I'm sure they'll tie the V-world stuff in some more with the creation of the Cylon race, but I have to admit that aspect of the show seems like a bit of a distraction, however cool and visually stimulating it is. Maybe they're gonna use it to somehow explain the whole second generation Cylon "projecting" ability that was mentioned by Number Six to Baltar on BSG in season 3? That seems to be the main connection I'm seeing between the two series. Although, the V-world and New Cap City stuff seems like it could be a totally separate series in and of itself; which begs the question, why are almost all sci-fi TV series always about either aliens, UFO's, or space opera? Nobody seems to really do much with virtual reality on TV. An area I'd personally rather see focused on in its own series rather than as a somewhat cool but distracting thread in a show about the creation of a sentient race of robotic killing machines.

The main problem I have is the show was originally sold as a family sci-fi drama focusing on the Greystones and the Adamas. Sure it does that, but it seems to do so in an overly filtered method. I mean, we haven't even seen Joseph Adama do any real legal work as a lawyer. He's just been messing around in New Cap City so far. Seems a bit off base, especially since we got all those references to Bill Adama's father as being this great Caprican lawyer. It just seems a bit like a retcon to me. What's so wrong with him being a lawyer? Why does he have to become a Matrix-like gun totting guy in a fedora, especially when they are now ignoring the awesome character of Sam Adama, the real life mob guy who kills people with a pair of knives? The whole time Joseph Adama was fraking around in New Cap City, my brother who was watching with me kept saying that Adama needs to get his brother into New Cap City to help him find his daughter. What a horribly wasted opportunity for not only the familial conflict about letting go of the dead, but the badassness his bro could bring to New Cap City.

Also, Joseph Adama's whole interaction with the creator of the Cylons = I'm starting to get a faint whiff of Lucas Syndrome here. What would have been so wrong with Joseph Adama never interacting with Daniel Greystone until later in the series? Maybe as a lawyer hired to go to court against Greystone Industries once the Cylons are starting to become a menace, or are demanding equal rights?

And young Bill Adama: good casting, great interaction with his uncle and and the Tauron gangsters, a nice and compelling strained father-son relationship, and then he disappears for like three whole episodes. Also, again with the Lucas Syndrome, young Willy Adama is totally ignorant of the creator of the Cylons being in league with his father and uncle. It just seems, I don't know, off to me for some reason. I think because it takes a lot of the punch out of the character of Admiral Adama and his journey from washed up battlestar captain to the leader of humanity in the wake of interstellar genocide. It also makes him come off as a bit of a dumb ass. I mean, wouldn't he remember being woken in the middle of the night to find the creator of the Cylons was in his apartment talking to his dad? He never mentioned to anyone on Galactica that his father was minorly acquainted with Daniel Greystone, not even to Lee or Laura. Its things like this that start to tarnish the awesome character of Bill Adama from BSG little by little. I shudder to think what they'll do to continue this disturbing trend as Caprica goes on. Hopefully he won't have an outburst of painting his bedroom while simultaneously being in a state of drunken temper tantrum, although that scene from BSG didn't really bother me that much at all for some reason, while some of this stuff from Caprica does.

The only thing I can see smoothing over the Adama connection with the current creator of the Cylons is if Vergis actually gets to takeover Greystone Industries and secures the military robot contract, meaning in the public eye Vergis will almost definitely be seen as the creator of the Cylons. This could be interesting as it might even lead to a chance at redemption for Daniel once the Cylons start fraking things up. Please let this be the case instead of letting Daniel become more and more twisted and greedy. It would actually be the unexpected thing to do, something that made the characters in BSG so awesome was that they didn't always react in the most obvious way. This is a huge chance for them to do the same with Daniel. What if he actually became someone who publicly rallied against further development and use of the Cylons?

I guess I'm pondering/asking if a straight forward exploration of the Cylon creation through the prism of Caprican law and ethics (sorta I, Robot or the Animatrix short about robot rights, The Second Renaissance) wouldn't have been more realistic, more focused, and less troublesome to the purity of BSG's later events? I'd like it if CAPRICA eventually gets there and with a cleaner narrative thrust, thus eventually leading to the First Cylon War, whether that becomes its own series or Caprica evolves into it.

I guess I'm feeling that the show, while good and compelling, is also wasting some potential and tarnishing BSG a bit in the process. :undecided

Maybe it was not the best idea to show the intimate details of how the Cylons were created? I mean, what would've been so wrong with a First Cylon War series that starts at the beginning of the war? It could've been different enough from BSG because it wouldn't have been the destruction of the 12 Colonies, but an actual war. I sure as hell would like to see more of the 12 colonies, even though Caprica and Caprica City is nice to look at. Bottom line though, we'd still get to see Bill Adama at an earlier stage in his life, but as the kick ass Viper pilot we got a glimpse of in Razor whilst getting a lot of the same elements that made BSG so great (space battles, military sci-fi angle, people under pressure during wartime, etc.) Hell, his dad could still be a character that we meet during the war down on Caprica. He could do some actual lawyering before the Cylon War reaches Caprica.

They've made V-zoey to real for me to believe she's just a computer program, she's obviously thinking.

Don't even get me started on how Daniel was able to create V-Zoey. That's some of the worst technobabble I've ever heard.

I completely agree, and I thought and hoped that was what 'caprica' would be about upon the first announcement of it. Unfortunately it's turned into some strange drama sci-fi show.

What made BSG so compelling was that it was able to combine drama, ethics, politics, etc... with amazing sci-fi action. This is why the final season went downhill for me, because it lost it's action routes. It got quite boring for me. It's as if Ron Moore got bored of the action aspect.

Now caprica is like the fourth season of BSG, just more convoluted. AS you mentioned, there's just too much going on. They're trying to make it a focus on both families, but it's as if each family is a series of it's own, with very little interaction.

I'm not sure if I care much though that Adama helped Greystone. I mean there's a lot I don't know about my parent's partners or friends. It's not something you discuss with your kids, especially when you steal a chip and kill people for this person. I believe Adama just doesn't want his kid to go down that path, so why mention something terrible he did?

The thing is after the 9th episode... I just don't care about anyone right now. The only person I care about is maybe Lacy (she's cute and a simple nice girl caught up in this), and maybe Adama to a degree, though his drug addiction and Holo craze near the end turned me away from him. Same with Tamara, I cared about her near the beginning, but that went away when she turned bad-ass.

I think they're focus on trying to paint them all as Grey characters is just tarnishing them too much. There are too many storylines. Also it's just missing what made BSG great.

Im hoping the second half will get better, but we'll see.

Though here's where I see it going somewhat. It's obvious that you can't copy Zoes program, so the only logical thing to create another cylon is to make another AI... or perhaps take an existing one such as Tamara... so I predict that Tamara will be in a cylon body sometime in the future. Then the other, as Nektonic mentioned, is that the holoband world is that 'projection' mentioned. HOWEVER, I also believe that the holoband world is where they go when they are 'ressurected'. As sister annoying ***** mentioned, she believes Zoe to be the final ascension or whatever. So, perhaps through some strange transference thing, Zoe will appear back in the holoworld after [SPOILER ALERT] she crashes into the military convoy... which would be a bit of a stretch. Also, perhaps Greystone will make another AI of his wife after she jumped?

It's gotta go somewhere and has to have more relatable and compelling characters. There's no starbuck, no older bill adama, no Apollo, no cheif... no-one I really care for...

I think you're right that in their zeal to make the characters "gray," they make them too flawed and too personally weak. That was one of the problems with BSG, too. So, by the time of the mid-season finale here, they're all pretty much train wrecks. They could all jump off the bridge, as far as I care now.

Have enjoyed it for the little real-world elements they throw in -- the Public Market sign from Seattle; Union Terminal from Cincinnati. Surely other stuff I didn't catch as well. The pentagon tops of the Graystone buildings are the Cylon insignia (as well as the bolt holes on the Cylon being pentagons); the Graystone G logo looks like a Cylon head.

But why would each colony need its name on its car license plates? :)

Is anyone going to watch the new season? I'm half-half. I kinda don't care what happens to Zoe, or how the suicide is going to affect anyone...

It's like these characters started in the deep end and just keep sinking.

Maybe I'll catch up on the first episode, but if it doesn't grab me, I'm not watching. I LOVE BSG and that's pretty much the only reason I watched the first season. I want to see where it goes. Just right now I hate the show.

I still have yet to see Season 1. We started watching, but life got busy and only made it through about five episodes.

Wish I could say I was surpised. But nope. I think its downfall was its ultra slow pace. There only so much atmosphere you can jam into a show before you actually have to come to the table with some type of decent story line. Sad thing is my understanding was the show was suppose to show the reasons for the revolution. From a season and a half I can hardly make out thats what the show was doing. All I could see was a teenager girl that hated her parents. I can switch to the CW to watch shows about that, and they do a better job at it (so my daughter says).

FRAAAAAAAKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That sucks. I guess it could be worse though, at least we've got the Cylon War I centric Blood & Chrome in the pipeline.
