Can't use unlimited RT after applying LUT to footage?

I'm using FCP 7 to edit Canon 7D DSLR footage. Footage is transcoded to Pro Res, sequence settings are set to 1080p Pro Res, so I know its not a configuration issue. I've been working with the technicolor cinestyle preset, and applying the LUT to the footage in the timeline. Prior to applying the LUT, the footage plays back fine using unlimited RT. But after applying the LUT, the footage becomes ultra choppy in the timeline and eventually after a couple seconds freezes up and gives me the dreaded "dropped frames" warning dialogue. This is the first time it's happened...as far as I remember I haven't ever had to switch to safe RT then render the footage after applying the LUT. What gives?

Well that's an effect that needs rendering... I wouldn't suggest applying it until you're done with your edit.
