Can't upgrade a Dell?

LOL Michael

You mean your computer was crappy?

I have had 5 Dell's (From Laptop's to Dimensions to my current Precisoin) and have had ZERO issues. I have added Firewires and Graphics Cards and never an issue.

My companies server is also a Dell Server and it has been Solid for 3 years hosting all of my sites

Dell is solid.

Computers do exactly what we tell them to; everything else is user error.

i agree dells are very solid computers. just upgrading mine sucked. i cant believe it lasted as long as it did, i really beat on it when i was into computer security/linux and all that nerdy stuff. lasted a good 3 years.

Does Dell make their own brand of Firewire cards or do they tweak with other ones?

it was by the brand Dazzle but "supported" by dell.

lucky for you, the card worked. this was a few years ago, so i cant really say why third party cards didn't work. someone here mentioned bios, and i guess thats all i can conclude.

well, the truth is, every single computer maker out there has sh*t like this going on. Just go to any computer maker's message boards and you'll read all sorts of this stuff. So sure, jump ship, but be prepared to deal with a whole new set of problems. Corporate America sucks.

i just got an HP Zd8000 laptop. 3.4gghtz 1gig ram all the goodies.

totally scalable. no problems. there are even a few removable plates where you can take out all the componenets. and put in new ones.

You get what you pay for kids.

All of our servers are HP, Compaq, or Dell. All of our desktops are Dell. We're talking nothing under $3000 bare (but that includes the "service contract", which is a joke...Dell won't come out, they'll just send you parts and talk you though it on the phone! HP, at least, will eventually send someone down.) Some of the servers cost upwards of $15000, fully loaded.

Nothing but trouble. I wouldn't buy any of them, if I were setting something up for myself. I'd rather get one built by Aberdeen at 1/3 the price and twice the power & reliability.

There should be no problem using standard cards and other devices in Compaq/HP's, Dell's, Acer's, or whatever.

But for any paranoid folks out there, it's quite easy to build your own PC part-by-part these days. WinXP and jumperless motherboards pretty much level the playing field for anyone patient enough to take the plunge. I used to make my own so I could overclock everything, but then I got lazy.

Dell is the way to go professionally and personally, unless you want to get one of those cool souped-up tablet PC's with the incredible integrated Wacom Intuos all-angle screens.

The only problem with building your own computer is installing all the drivers and you don't have a warranty.

You do have warranties, but they all vary in duration, and you have to figure out what's broken. But troubleshooting really isn't that difficult.

As for driver installation - that's a piece of pie. It's not like this is the Dark Age, you know.

Actually I have a Dell Dimmension 4600 series. I tried to add a firewire card, but it is non standard. I had to buy one from Dell in order to do it. Furthermore, as far as adding RAM I had to order that from Dell as well.
Dell doesn't make a dual monitor card for my computer so that option is out for me.

In general, for future purchases I am just going to build my own computer. Seems like the better option for me in the future.

One of my computers is also a 4600, maybe you have the c version that is half the size? but mine I've added 3rd party RAM, HD's and a Firewire card no problems, it also came with a dual monitor video card.. my 4600 is a beast!
