Can't Hollywood come up with anything original?

Meh, I'm not interested in originality as much as I'm interested in spending my $10 and 2 hours on something entertaining and thought provoking. This trailer ain't that, though I had some hopes for it being a fan of the original Ape movies.

Jesus, what's next, a remake of Casablanca, in 3D?

Seriously, the music is good, and they probably pumped as much money into the VFX as the entire budget for Heaven's Gate, but seriously, why?

What's most aggravating is that they could have probably made this film, and had NO connection to the POTA series, and it would have seemed...possible. But because of the crass commercialism of latching onto that franchise, almost in title only, as old or dead or whatever it is/was, is instantly cringe inducing here.

actually, that looks pretty cool. i wouldnt say they are in any way 'aping' the original. is this supposed to be a prequel that explains how the original POTA happened?

Except it completely negates the ending of the original, which is what gave it the most impact. It made you think.

Rod Serling must be turning over in his grave.

There were already prequels/sequels that explained how the original POTA happened--Escape from the Planet of the Apes and Conquest of the Planet of the Apes. Looks like this one will mirror Conquest more.

Weta or not the ape characters still look CG and the physics of the ape jumping in the last scene at around 1:40, over the railing, are way off.

I suspect some of this CGI was subcontracted out to , well, use your imagination.

If it were Digital Domain on the other hand, I'd be surprised.

//Edit: I can see the CGI apes for long shots but why for closeups? Wouldn't a mask do 10X a better job? Even some of the mid shots I think a practical set up would have been better than CGI. Either that or pay to hire some better CGI artists. That trailer wasn't very impressive to me if that was the goal as far as (big budget) CGI goes. Don't know what else to say.

I didn't mind the CG so much as the dialogue and acting on Franco's behalf. I've seen films with bad CG before that were still engaging. But you can't fix fundamental problems.

Yes, I agree. I wouldn't even have mentioned the CGI if were not for the trailer giving them a visual credit midway as if to say, what they said. A self promotion.
So I'm here to say for a self promotion for the CGI I say they, Weta, failed.

This is my favorite CGI company. Just my opinion. This is what I've personally become accustomed to seeing in features with these budgets so I'm going by that.

//edit: They have a wealth of demo reels at thier site for anyone who likes this stuff.

Yeah, they're great. They just opened a studio in South Florida 30 minutes north of where I used to live. They held an open job fair a few weeks before I left for L.A. If I had stayed, I would have definitely tried out. I heard hundreds of people were there.

I love that all of these movies always promote using Avatar cameras or Avatar CGI. Avatar looked like a friggin animated CGI movie to me in the theatre, in 3D and again in HD. It receives way, way, way more accolades than what it deserves.

As far as this movie goes, it'll probably be fun if only because the non-human combatants are going to win. That's what's always been great about the original Ape films -- the "good guys" usually lose.

Is that the Inception theme being re-purposed or a knock-off of the same? I can't tell.

It hasn't even been out a year and the Inception score is already the most imitated of all time. I hear variations of it EVERYWHERE. TV ads, other movies, video games, tracks from indie composers...

I think it still has a way to go before it gets as annoying as the repurposing of Lux Aeterna from Requiem for a Dream, the go to track for lazily making something dramatic.

That just looks absolutely vomit inducing. Really......why? Why does Hollywood do this?

Edit-ooops, and to answer to your question, NOPE. Not as long as what they keep churning out pleases the masses and lines their pockets.

Its just simply because Hollywood is all about marketing and its easier to market something thats been brought to market before, i mean think of all the data they have to compare to - markets, demographics, sales, so forth. It's easier for them to hedge there bets on these than to create new ones - thats like a huge gamble.

Thats where us indies come in :P
