Can't hear AE audio

I've been using After Effects for a couple of years and I guess I use it backwards from most people. I create the graphic stuff first in AE then import it to an NLE and add the audio.

For the first time I need to hear the audio of the mov track in AE. When I hold the Ctrl key (PC) I can scrub and hear it but when I do a ram preview of a work area I hear nothing.
I can also render the movie out and hear it the final but not while I'm working.

I also see the speaker icon on the track.

So my question is how do hear the audio?

Hmmm.. when I press the period key I get a ram preview of the audio only. How do I get both audio and video?

Zero on the numerical pad renders with audio doesnt it? period plays audio from the cti forward without rendering required.

I can't seem to get audio to work by pressing zero. I know it's there because I can press the period and hear it by itself.

does it render a preview and just doesnt play the audio when pressing zero or pressing zero does nothing at all?

I think the numlock key has to be on as well.

i agree with jdajda.. Ive been editing to music in AE for a while. Try setting the work bar over the area you want to hear. Press the 0 on the num pad and it should start automatically when its finished. If not, hit space bar.

You should see/hear video with music.

I made a very small work area (so that I have enough ram to preview) then I hit zero. The area fill with green and starts to play. ... No audio... I hit the space bar and get the same results... video ...no audio..
I hit the period and I hear the audio ...no video...

Maybe there is something wrong with my setup... thanks guys... I'll live without it for now.

I'm not in front of my computer with AE on it but I think there is an option under one of the menus to turn audio off or on in the ram preview... I'll look when I get to work in a few hours and post back.

eta - in the menu composition -> preview -> audio make sure audio is checked. I've had that happen before and does exactly what you are describing.
