Can't get my normal tapes, what's the next best?

Hi Guys,

I've been using Panasonic 63 min MQ tapes exclusively in my DVX, but I can't get any in Australia at the moment, everyone seems to be out of them!

I need some for this week, so have a choice of either going for 83 min MQ or 63 min PQ.

I'd read that the 83 min tapes weren't recommended and it was best to stick to 63 min ones. Are the PQ ones ok to use after using MQ ones all this time?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

.Alex

Of the two choices, I would go for the 63 minute PQs. You are correct about the 83 minute ones not being recommended. Both the PQ and MQ use similar lubrication techniques, so you should be just fine until your supplier gets 63 minute MQs back in stock.

Alex why not try globalmediapro.com based in Auckland. They do boxes of 50 MQ tapes at a very very nice price and they'll have them to you in Aus in a flash.

I just bought a box myself and I'm very happy with them. All factory sealed and well packed.

My god those tapes are cheap! Top job lacuna!! I've ordered a box already. That's a saving of about $3 per tape compared to what you pay at the cheapest places in Aus. Have you bought much other stuff from them?

Yeah, they are legit, and very efficient.

In the last couple of months I've picked up the Panasonic 0.8x wide angle, a couple of 5400Ah batteries, and a Vinten Vision 3 tripod, and a hardcase... all 30-50% below NZ retail. Actually this outfit is especially good if you're in New Zealand or the UK because they do free shipping. But I figure if you're in Aus it'd still be relatively cheap considering how low their prices are overall.

Some stuff (like the panny wide angle lens and MQ tapes) seem to be considerably cheaper on this site than any other online shop on the planet. Still, I'd be wary of buying a camera from them, simply because there's no manufacturer's warranty.

I would recommend the generic 5400Ah tapes for about A$100 each though... just go to cameras, click on DVX102, and it lists a whole bunch of compatible accessories.

That's great to know. I'm going to the South Island at Xmas time anyway, so I can just order stuff and get it sent to my mother-in-law in Christchurch. It's a shame there's no warranty on the camera, as it's about a $3000 discount on the recommended retail price.

Thanks again for sharing!

Actually, there is a "globalmediapro" warranty on all products, which they claim is equal to the manufacturer's warranty. However, it does require you to return the product to their Auckland or UK offices. I just wouldn't want to test them on it so I've bought both my DVX cameras from Panasonic NZ.

You know, for $3000 difference you could afford to pay the repair costs on almost any fault if something did go wrong. What I can say is, everything they've sent me has been factory sealed, fresh stock. And I'm pretty sure "they" is one or two guys sitting at computers in London and Auckland (Igor is the only name I come across). I don't think the product even goes through their hands as such.

Glad that was of use to you anyway and enjoy the South Island. (oh, and I hope the World 11 whips you boys on Wednesday)

Ha! Yeah, me too!! I hate cricket, and I figure the more we lose the less I'll have to hear about it. Now rugby, that's another story...I'm still not over our shocking performance in this year's Tri Nations. Still, I'm looking forward to watching the All Blacks tour of the UK and Ireland. I'll be cheering you guys all the way!!

Wow Fritz... I know we shouldn't really be talking sports down-under on DVX user but that's a bit of a shock... you don't sound like a red-blooded Aussie - don't like cricket, what??? Ironically how you feel about cricket is much the same as how I feel about rugby... we're swamped with it over here. But hey, it was nice to chat and if make it to Wellington during your holiday gimme a bell!

Maybe that's it - you just get so sick of this one thing being shoved down your throat ever since you were a kid. As far as cricket goes, I think Patrick O'Brian (he wrote all those Master and Commander books) described it perfectly: "insufferable tedium of unconscionable length"!!

No time to visit the North Island this trip, but when I do I'll certainly take you up on that - and if you're ever passing through Sydney make sure you do the same.
