Can't finalize uploading to vimeo or youtube

I recently bought a 7D and have read up on all the issues and codecs needed to get this mov file to play smoothly in vegas. I have downloaded the the Avid DNxHD codec and have followed this tutorial to the "T" in regards to my render settings http://eugenia.gnomefiles.org/2009/07/22/exporting-to-an-intermediate-codec/.

I plan to buy Cineform Neoscene soon but my issue isn't necessarily with the choppy editing within vegas. My issues is after i rendered and want to upload to vimeo or youtube. no matter if I chose a wmv file format or mov they will never finalize their upload on vimeo or youtube. Whenever I'm on either video site and click the upload file and pick my file, the upload progress bar fills almost immediately. this seems very odd as either my Charter cable provider increased my upload speeds (unlikely) or some issue is wrong with my file (likely). In the past I'd have to watch my upload progress bar inch little by little for hours if my files were a decent size. It will either blast thru the progress bar and stop at around 95% or it will say it's uploaded but will just sit there and never finalize. So what gives?

The rendered files play back flawlessly on my computer after the job is done. It's only when I'm trying to upload that I'm seeing some sort of problem.

I've included some screenshots of exampels of how I'm setting up my project and also my render settings for both wmv files and for mov files.

Here is how this perticular project was set up. The original footage from the camera was in 720 @ 60 fps. I wanted to slow this perticular video down so I see my project up to be a 24p timeline at 720p resolution.....

Can anyone offer some advice or tell me what i might be doing wrong. Again, everything looks GREAT after rendering and watching it on my PC. But uploading is the issue here.

Well, forget uploading a DNxHD file to ANYONE.. that's not going to work. The WMV file should work fine. I'm acutally surprised it's not, but support for anything other than mpeg4 seems to be spotty these days.

So, I am going to recommend that you use the Sony AVC template. I can't remember if it gives you any uploading profiles standard or if you have to make them, but use similar setting to what you have for WMV. Similar bit rates, etc. There is nothing in that profile that SHOULD stop you. I would say if you want to try to stay with the WMV files, to change the video format from Windows Media 9, to Windows Media 7. There is some trickery in Windows Media 9 that I won't go into here, but some sites have trouble processing it.

Using mpeg4 is more widely accepted at most streaming sites.

Yup I'm rendering out a test for mp4 right now so hopefully it will work. The Avid codec is a mov file 9quictime 7) which I saw on vimeo and youtube was an acceptable file format, no?

What is strange is that if I render out as a avi or a wmv that previously failed to finalize in vimeo or youtube; and then take that file and throw it in the garbage that is called Windows Movie Maker and render it out as a wmv eveything will then usually finalize on vimeo or youtube. Although quality goes down the gutter doing that too.

I'm wondering what workflow most Canon 5D2 or 7D people are doing that also use Vegas. my file sizes for even a 1.5 minute cliop with audio are usually a couple of gigs worth. No way I can upload to the sites with a file that large yet people have very nice HD short films on there with several mintues worth of footage somehow.

I've been putting 5D footage on Vimeo and Youtube for the past month out of Vegas...

The bitrate controls the size of the files... period. You can use a bit rate calculator to tell you your maximum bit rate. I wrote one in Excel. I use it to give me a quick idea for putting things on DVD and BluRay. But it works just as well for uploads.

You should be able to put 15-20 minutes of video on Vimeo without too much trouble. I've put over an hour there.

Success!! Thank you so much for your input so far!

I tried Sony AVC template and it seems to of worked. My first render try with it I lost a ton of quality. 2nd try I upped the bit rate to 15,000,000 and the quality looks better although nowhere near of the original. It also has a little bit of jaggedness to it in some parts of the video though. I am still new to all this so I need to read up on the effects of bitrate, compression and everything to truly get a grasp of what i'm doing. I usually just do a bunch of trial and error until U get a smooth look matching the preview in Vegas. I have a lot to learn obviously lol.

Here is a test video I made http://www.vimeo.com/8288285.

Excuse the fact that I just grabbed the camera and went to film the dog real quick heh. If you look close down at the very bottom you'll see a thin greenthat turns into a purple line. What would cause this?

I get a better quality out of the MainConcepts AVC/ACC templates that I then tweak to whatever spec I need. Like Perrone says, mp4 is the way to go.

You need to understand that the smoother your video is, the better it's going to compress. Clean video makes for clean compression. I NEVER use more than 6Mb (you just used 15) for my uploads. They are going to be converted to about 1-2 Mbps by the streaming site. So you're just burning up upload space. 15 Mbps is begging to approach BluRay levels. Consider that most consumer handycams only record at 17Mbps. You should be seeing EXCEPTIONAL quality for web uploads at those bit rates.

As to the Mainconcept vs Sony AVC encoders, both do a nice job. I've had some issues with some sites not accepting the Mainconcept uploads. I've had zero problems with the Sony, so I stick with it.

Gotcha and thanks for the advice guys. I'm hoping tomorrow I'll have decent weather so I can go out and grab some more test footage for playing around with bitrates and such now that I know the Sony AVC works for uploading.

Questions for you.
Why not 32bit on pixel. Will give a better quality
Why is interlace settings on. Did you not shoot progressive?
Also I see discrepancies.. on aspect ratios. should 1.00 unless your using HDV then 1.33
