can't figure out how to mask a shape with another shape in AE...

I'm at a total loss how to mask a shape with another shape in After Effects?

Is it not possible to do this in AE??? This is for some animated maps I wil be using AE for.

I know how to create the shapes but I can't see how you mask one shape with another shape.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Try using the shape layer as a track matte.
