can't export OMF from sequence in CS4

I'm editing a feature in CS4 not out of choice but rather out of neccessity (just can't afford a mac right now to run fcp)

The first hurdle was not being able to sync A/V and save that as its own clip in the bins like you would in avid or FCP. i then realized the only option was to save each synced clip as its own sequence and edit from sequences in a master sequence.

that brings a new problem i just realized now. i cant export an OMF from this master sequence because its reading sub sequences as clips. so therefore how the hell am I going to get my files over to an audio guy in protools so he can clean them up and do whatever else they do.

I dont see how premiere calls itself "pro" if it can't be used for more than wedding and music videos..even then you better not be shooting you video on 35 then doing an offline on premiere.

If i could afford it i wouldnt even think twice and simply cut this feature on fcp however i'm stuck with premiere cs4 so what do I do here?

Any ideas/workarounds? Is it maybe me who's doing something wrong? I've only done one scene from my film thus far just to test the workflow and these are the problems I've had.

I'm on a very strict deadline so any help from premiere gurus would be greatly appreciated.

thanks.

I had run into the same problem... I ended up export OMF from each sub sequence... it's not that bad... just like when you do send the sequence to After FX for color correcting or any specific visual adjustment... you should be doing that on the sub sequence instead of from the master sequence...

now my second question is that since they'll be getting the sub sequence wont that affect them (the audio guys) when the need to do audio transitions etc...don't they need all the cut points really to be able to mix and master or whatever they do?

the way I look at it all they can do here is just clean up the individual files, send them back to me then i "replace footage" in the subsequence.

how do we ever get to a stage where i can send out the audio edited sequence for mixing or whatever else.

What I did was to send him the low res version of the visual... then separate OMF scenes... then he'll fix the audio on each scene then mix it accordingly with the master visual... then he'll deliver me each track for dialogs, fx/folley and music and I'll put those on the master track without replacing the original audio from the sub sequence. Other people work flow might be more efficient and different but that is my work flow and I think it works quite well for me.

that sounds workable and could work for me. however how did you resync the clean audio in the master sequence?

if he sends me entire clean audio files and lets say a clip is used 8 times in a particular scene then how do i place it in sync in all those 8 spots on the master sequence?

I hope you understand my question..a little hard to explain.

okay I think I understood your question...

He doesn't send me seperate files for each sub sequence for the dialog... only one master dialog track (aiff or mp3 or wave file) and it's already mixed accordingly with everything else (music and folley) so all I have to do is either add in another audio track on the master sequence, then mute the original master audio... or replace the original audio on the master sequence with this master dialog track that he sent me... that's it

Update: i could have asked him to give me one master track that has everything mixed in... but on the last project, I wanted to do my own 5.1 mix from Premiere as i always wanted to do that.. so i asked him to give me separate tracks of everything (dialogs, fx/foley and music)

Sorry if i'm being a knuckle head but one element still sounds confusing to me.
I"ll break it down in steps so we're on the same page for sure.

Workflow:
1-sync scenes in sequences individually and put them in bins aka sub sequences (mimicking clips)

2-create a Master Sequence to edit in and edit those sub sequences into that by setting in and out points. That master sequence only has one track of audio that is pulling from all the channels in the subsequence..in my case 4 audio track cus we ran 4 mics.

3. once your edit in the master sequence is done, export and OMF file for EACH subsequence that you used in the master edit.

4. send all those individual omf files to the audio post guys

5. heres where i start to get confused. they clean up these individual tracks and send them back to you as ONE sequence that you put back on your master sequence replacing the audio thats already there. How do they send you the edit points. Do they watch a reference video you sent them and reedit the sound? By that i mean cut and paste clips into a single timeline exactly how you had them? how can they possibly even do that considering sometimes audio overlaps into different shots etc...plus wouldn't that be a nightmare for them? I think i'm getting something wrong at this step.

I don't know how they do it as I'm not familiar with ProTools at all... but I figure they might have to do the same, edit each sequence separately with all the edit points that you already have in there then compile into a master sequence and sync up with the master reference video...
Maybe you should discuss the workflow with your post audio person? maybe he has a better workflow that would help him and maybe work out a process that could help you too... that was what I did anyway...
