Canopus instead of camera

It's using Firewire just like anything else on the computer will. QT Player has no Firewire output (that I've ever been aware of). It's advantage is that you don't have to plug in and turn on your camera to monitor. And you can capture from analog devices easily. That's all. For the price is looks really nice.

Nice looking device, don't know about it's reliability, but a really nice price. Would save having to run your camera just to monitor externally. But it won't add any functionality to your software. If it has some good reviews with Mac users, I may even consider one.

Any FCP users know anything about this?

Since I posted, I found a couple of recommendations to try this:

http://developer.apple.com/samplecode/SimpleVideoOut/index.html

It'll give you a folder from which you only want the file called "SimpleVideoOut X". Supposedly you turn on your camera, Canopus, or whatever, launch this and adjust settings, and it'll make QT Player send video out the FW port. I haven't tried it yet, but others say it works.

Oh, the reviews I've seen for the Canopus have been very good.

It does look neat, it's free, could maybe do what you want. Don't know about dropped frames or anything.

Didn't work. The interface makes it look like you run SVO instead of QT Player, and I did get a similar window on the desktop. Made my monitor blink a bit, but no picture. Maybe someone else will have more luck.

The Canopus is a GREAT little device for both odd-source capturing (old VHS, S-Video, TV, etc) and video monitoring. I use mine daily, freeing up my camera from playback monitor duty.

Problem solved! The clips I was trying were exported with H264 codec. At least for me, those won't import into FCP or play in SVO. When I fixed that and re-exported, it worked!

What software do you use with it for playback? So far, FCP is the only one I can imagine working.

Primarily through FCP as a "non-controllable device", but also through iChat to show clips (and pay-per-view events!) long distance.
