canons' answer to the Scarlet ?

Awe man, I thought this was going to be the rumored XL-H1 style APS-C HD prosumer video camera.

Still though, I'm interested to see what they do with the next set of DSLR's and how well (or not well) they do with improving the HD movie modes.

they pulled the article - I'm thinking they were wrong and it was an image of the L1 hi8

It was a Hi8 video camera straight outta the 1980's. No HD here...

I don't know, it has a certain retro-charm to it. It almost reminds me of a 16mm movie camera.

Give us all the modern tech (flip out LCD, APS-C, EOS mount, 24p, good codec, SDHC or CF cards) in a similar yet more ergonomic and sleek black body, not that weird Canon NASA white... I bet it does gangbusters.

Just don't price it so high like the XL-H1 series.

Yeah, in it's day, it was the Cadillac [outdated reference] of consumer/prosumer video cameras.

So, what was the story? Did someone claim a L1 body with HD components?

Maybe someone is buying up cheap obsolete camera bodies to gut so they can build their own digital cinema camera?

Wouldn't this thing actually have a 35mm Canon lens mount already? As long as they could get the proper size sensor and install it inside the camera body at the proper distance from the inner end of the lens then wouldn't they be able to get 35mm depth of field?

maybe canons' watching ? truth is this is just the design they need to go head to head with the Scarlet ....they just don't know it yet !! ....but with an aps sensor , 1080p , and dualcard readers - let's hope someone at canon has a long memory !! sorry for the detour /k

actually that's one beautiful camera by todays standards - here's one on ebay - nice package

Actually, if you go to the ebay link, take a look at the picture that shows the back and the right side of the camera. That basic shape and contour taken down to a smaller size and in black would be pretty neat. It could then be used like a large DSLR or as an HD video camera or digital cinema camera. It would probably not need to be a whole lot larger than a 5D mkII.

Obviously, they don't need a tape drive, so that space on the back is perfect for a large flip out LCD. And I would recommend they find a better place for the battery as well. But I'm digging the basic style of this camera body. I think there's real potential there.

Yeah, with a little rework and some black it'd look great. Maybe some harder edges and a little metal body... oh whatever, just get the scarlet.

That was my first prosumer camera. I sold it to buy an XL1 years ago.
The L2 can be seen in several movies.. Titanic and Godzilla (1998 with Matthew Broderick) to name two.
