Canon XH A1 (Price Range)

Going to Lease a Canon XH A1 for 3 year's, or, find something equally as good.

Before I was about to.. seal the deal. Thought it might be wise checking to see if any dvxusers thought it unwise. Any recommendations apart from a XHA1? Is it a dying breed? Would it be a worthy investment?

If so, I could have it as soon as tomorrow evening..

(do you think the Canon EOS-5D MKII would have better footage?) Photograph and video camera all in one..

If not.. I could get 3 or so Canon VIXIA HV20's, instead of a single Canon XH A1. :)
Any feedback, help, at all?

Bah, just use a new iPhone. Camera and editing suite, all in one. You'll do just fine.

Better yet, use 2 of 'em. The second for 'B' Camera, phone calls and script supervision.

Could use the iphone as a lcd prompt screen attachment for the actors to read off..

But looking for something different I think. ;P

panasonic hmc151, nicer image in my opinion, better low light, is avchd with sd card so great to not have to rely on & capture tape, but avchd is a bugger to edit though i hear premiere cs4.1 has helped things, otherwise you may have to transcode

In terms of color, latitude, and depth of field the 5D mkII has a great cinematic look for filmmaking endeavors. The problem with the 5D mII is its video mode is supposedly a real ***** to deal with. Although I've heard of a firmware update that is supposed to fix some issues with the video. The main problem with the mark II is that it is locked at 30p. It doesn't even have 60-freaking-i if you can believe it.

If you need a reliable pro camera for other types of production (corp, wedding, events, etc.) you might want something like the XHA1 or HMC150. Of course if you just want something for personal filmmaking projects, then maybe the issues the 5DmII has will not be as big of a deal if you don't have clients breathing down your neck asking why the camera is not working.

Why not the Panasonic GH1? It shoots AVC-HD in 1080 24p, 720 60p, and has a pretty decent 30p MJPEG mode. With that you've got almost all of the advantages of the 5DmkII and none of its disadvantages, besides again no 60i on the GH1 (as far as I know, 60p can probably be pretty easily converted to 60i if the need arises). The best part is that the GH1 is nearly $1,000 less than the mark II.

And the XHA1 is definitely not a dying breed. Even the older DVX100's and Sony PD-150's are still kicking and are not considered obsolete yet, just not HD capable.
