Canon XC10 4K video and stills camcorder

gorgeous work

tell me something from your experience if you did any testing... how large you think it is possible to go? 44in. prints? 36in. prints?

Depends on how the print will be viewed. Ever stood next to a billboard? I've had hundreds of billboards printed off the Canon 1Ds (11 mp camera). They look great from the road. But for gallery printing, with the right processing and interpolation, I say 20in is the max. For long distance viewing, you can go 10 ft wide. For web, (where we see most of our content now) it doesn't matter. Think about how many images you view on your smart phone vrs actual printed magazine work per month?. Which is why if the shot allows, you can use an iPhone these days for publication.

85% of my work is displayed on the web. Most views are seeing it on an iPhone. Times have changed.

Very nice indeed.

This Canon may be just the camera for you, if the DR is half-decent. No need for shallow DoF in that kind of shots.

For the record, I'm also taking screengrabs from my videos lately and posting them as stills, but they go on facebook, so 1080p is not a limitation. Motion blur is, even at that very low resolution.

Maybe it is my NLE (Edius which is a YUV centric editor) but frame grabs put into Photoshop are always off from a gamma/exposure perspective. This dual workflow approach would benefit from RAW as you could adjust for the different mediums. But maybe it is just Edius? Dusty, how do your frame grabs look from the timeline? Do you need to doctor them in Photoshop?

Export from FCPX TIFF files and sometimes take them into Lightroom for further enhancement.

Thanks. Do they files have a difference in gamma when they arrive in Lightroom? My frame grabs have always had a milky look and need to be adjusted to add contrast etc back in inside Photoshop.

Concerning that girl in Paris - was that footage shot with Canon log or with a different setting? If Canon log was used, then goodbye to those 12 stops of DR.

I dont' think it was neither Wide DR or Log, more likely Standard. Looking at the later demos, the DR looks much better than in the first one, both in the Parkour one and in the fashion film which used an XC10 for the gimbal shots:https://vimeo.com/127149178

here is the4 google translation of the written review.

basically noise visible starting at ISO 6400

We tested the room with four intermediate values, from 3200 to 20,000 ISO (the maximum available). We started to notice the noise from ISO 6400, gradually increasing this up to 20,000 ISO, value practically unusable except for emergency shooting. In other words, the machine gives the best of himself in proper lighting conditions.

Sample video followed by reviews that cover only specs. Note the blue banding in the sky. Not clear if that is from the camera, post or vimeo compression.
