Canon user thread - post your pictures here

It just goes to show how shallow the DOF on 35mm lenses are.... im talking milimeters. infact on a 5D at about 8 feet, with a 50mm F1.4 @1.4 im still choosing whether the eyes or nose are in focus.....

You are so right. I've shot pictures where the smallest object just barely in the foreground is "soft" or slightly blurred. I was shooting cherry's on a tree. Even some of the cherry's by way of where they were in the bunch were in-out of focus. My eye just can't seem to keep up with the auto-focus I guess.

in some modes the autofocus will actually track the object too.. that's why AF sometimes actually is better....

when you are attempting to use selective focus to extremes like a nose in focus rather than an eye it can be difficult to use autofocus because the camera doesn't know what area you want to focus on. There are of course tricks depending on what you camrea settings are such as framing the item you want in focus in the center focusing and then framing the shot the way you want. if you are using a good zoom lens you can zoom in focus and pull out. fast lenses such as the 50 1.8 will focus a lot quicker than even an l series 2.8 because of the extra light.

Hey Tom Lowe... thanks! No, I haven't been to Monache Meadows yet but I hear it's beautiful! I don't spend much time too far south of Mt. Whitney (except out of Cottonwood Pass) so I have some exploring to do down there. I love fly fishing for golden trout and that's just south of the Golden Trout Wilderness, or somewhere in that area (I think). Gracias.

i only use the center focus point. Then reframe. i get tack sharp results almost everytime, uinless the subject or i move.

On our recent trip to South Lake Tahoe, this guy stood quietly and patiently for us to break out lunch and offer a little something :)
