I like the lighting. What settings where you using? Any flash?

Did the venue have red and purple gels properly placed? (Unlike the setup I gripe about in my post!)

lighting was mostly red on the left. the blues/purples on the right were from neon beer signs. took this at a sf bar my friend and i just randomly walked in.
50mm 1.2
iso 800
1/80
put my WB all the way cool to make up for the extreme red lights

Went Christmas tree shopping the yesterday in the snow. 7D with the 28-135.

Not really digging the 28-135. I need to get my hands on some better glass. I have to say, coming from Nikon at first I didn't like the look Canon was giving me, but after playing with it some more I love it. The skin tones are amazing, and I am really really finding it hard to over expose that sensor.

Hey William, nice pics. Could you post a small source (point) of light with the blades closed down a bit, but completely out of focus? That way we can see the shape of the bokeh. There is something about the OOF that feels weird but it might just be that you said you didn't like the lens and I am looking at them critically. I like the first best. I am hoping I'll have some snow on Wed. :P

Here ya go. These are Christmas lights on a bush at 112mm, f/8, 320iso, .8 sec.

Not too pretty. The picture quality of this lens itself is definitely passable in day to day use I think. The mechanics of the thing stink though.

Thanks. I guess you still can't beat the range for the price you guys got it for as a kit so not a bad purchase. Sometimes I wish I would have gotten it myself, even if the mechanics are as bad as you say William.

BTW, -2 degrees outside and a blizzard is coming! :D

Is that foreground bokeh or background? There is a big difference in lens performance depending on which one you are talking about. Generally lens manufacturers don't concentrate on having appealing foreground bokeh (sometimes neither is concentrated on)

I think you both might be mistaken. Looks to me like the shot is exposed for the sky, sun is being used as a kicker on the left and strobe filling the faces from the front...maybe slightly right.

No post HDR work here...the use of the strobe is giving it an in camera HDR effect...the best kind!

Yep. You are correct. After a closer look, I can spot a shadow from the leg of the sitting band member in red tee. It's going against the sun.
