Canon Rebel XTi - New 10MP DSLR

Just thought people might be interested to know that Canon has released their specs on the successor to their best-selling Rebel XT camera, officially dubbed in North America as the Rebel XTi. It increases the resolution from 8MP to 10MP, has a much larger 2.5" LCD for reviewing images, and a new dust reduction system that's pretty cool.

Its a cool camera & the dust reduction is a wellcome addition, but any one looking into this camera should also check out the Sony Alpha DSLR which is jampacked with new features & comes with a lens for less that the price of 400D body only.
 
Here's an observation of the XTi’s anti-dust system:
Dust is shaken off of the sensor filter, thus preventing the user from having to engage in the very difficult task of manually cleaning it themselves (note sarcasm) ;), BUT where does that dust go after it's been shaken off?
Is the dust still not floating around in the camera somewhere?
How would the user clean that dust out?

At any rate, as far as the competition goes I expect Alpha sales to be more heavily impacted than the Nikon D80 sales.
The Sony Alpha has some interesting features, the anti-shake CCD configuration acquired and improved upon from the Konica/Minolta fold is particularly useful, but the Alpha’s IQ is rated very poorly at high ISO.

As many are beginning to see, high ISO capability is one of the strongest selling points for a DSLR now. I'd say at least 1/3 of Canon's success with its DSLRs can be attributed to its treasured high ISO performance alone.

However, this time around we're likely to see things even up a bit in the high ISO department between Canon and Nikon.
The Nikon D80 which uses a more advanced image/noise processing engine than its brother the D200 has shown to produce much better IQ at high ISO than the Alpha and the D200, and might even surprise quite a few at how well it performs against the new Canon XTi.
I think Canon produced an interesting camera with the XTi, but the anti-dust system seems more like a gimmick to shield the other areas of the camera which are deemed somewhat inadequate when compared to the D80.

When comparing the Canon XTi with the D80, the D80 has:

bigger and brighter viewfinder
status LCD
spot metering (arguably worth the price difference alone)
dedicated AF assist lamp
Faster operation for startup and less shutter lag
Auto ISO with 1/3 increments
Built in Wireless Master flash command (Nikon's flash system in general is superior to Canon)
Better battery life

I’m sure there are some other things, but that’s enough for me to stick with Nikon.
 
Well, I found out what happens to the dust after its shaken from the filter.
Evidently, it is supposed to stick to an "absorbent material ringing the low-pass filter."
So then the question becomes, what happens once this material is clogged or if other environmental variables render the material ineffective?
How does the user replace that material if such an event occurs?
I'm sure these are variables taken into consideration, so there probably isn't anything to worry about, but it is still a detail that interests me.

I think this Canon is to compete with the 10 mp Nikon D200. No one is interested on the Panasonic L-1?
 
Actually,
the 400D pulls double duty against the Nikon D50 and the Nikon D80, while the Nikon D200 pulls double duty against the Canon 30D and Canon 5D.
The remaining pro models (Nikon D2x, Nikon D2Hs, Canon 1DMKII, Canon 1DsMKII) are pretty much directly aligned with one another.
 
Could anyone tell me if there are some kinds of plug on this camera for conneting a sync cable (connecting external blitz). Canon did not include this on the 350D model. And I really hope that they included that this time. Anyone?

The Rebel is the 300D.
The Rebel XT is the 350D.
The Rebel XTi is the 400D.

P.S. - I just picked up my XTi yesterday and it's awesome.
