Canon May 'Bring the Might of Its Legal Team' if You Modify 1DX or 1DC Firmware

Lets not go there.

But the bloody things do break easily and for 12k they could have at least included pro connectors but it's more evidence that they just wanted slap a C badge on a 1DC and change as little hardware as possible.

This is exactly what I believe happened. Canon: We need a Cinema 4K DSLR B Cam to complement productions being done on the C300, C500, and other cameras. What can we come up with? Canon solution: Modify our best DSLR, put a red C on the body,.... done. No new design or crazy R and D budgets. Charge extra to cover the extra bits we did have to add. (and some extra for that fancy Red C) We win!
Lol, that's actually smart business....but what they are doing on the lower end is a bit plodding compared to some other designs. They'll keep doing their few little things on each camera, it's up to us to tell them whether they're good enough or not with our dollars. Right now in that segment Nikon is even slower, and Sony (while doing innovative designs and adding 60P) isn't moving super fast either on the moire/aliasing front or better codecs. Only the GH3 is separating itself. Just like the GH2 did before it.

Soccer moms probably don't shoot DSLRs now...lol, they probably shoot cell phone and smaller cameras like the NEX. I believe Canon/Nikon DSLR bodies sell the most to creative people...either photographers or increasingly photographer/ music video guy/short film girl/blogger/etc. The landscape of creativity is changing a mile a minute.

The one point I'd make, owning a small creative production shop but one that's been pretty successful for two decades - this is the one time (in 7 figures in production investment over that time) that I say, "just wait".

Indeed

In 12 months there will be something like the 1DC for half the price. You can pick up an F3 with s-log 2nd hand for a lot less than a 1DC. The 12k sticker price is going to put a lot of people off who where potential buyers at a more reasonable price of 8k. Knowing Canon they're probably going to announce a 5DC at NAB for 8k. There's so many options now (all due to volume sales to A.S.Cs and soccer moms of course) it's not worth wasting too much energy on Canon.

Meanwhile I've got the 1DC and will have it paid for twice over by the end of the month with actual paid work.

It's a tool like any other. Creative people will make beautiful images with it. And smart business people will make money with it.

To be honest I haven't been to a soccer match since I was a kid and the only thing you could shoot with then was super 8. My girlfriend shoots with a nex 5-n or an iPhone. The only females I've seen shooting with DSLRs are indies!

That is very interesting - I cant see what possessed you to get it - but I believe you have good reason - ie I am sure have made a great choice for your business.

Wh do you like it?

ISO? Size?

Lol, exactly...when I went to the U of M football games with my Nikon, I was one of a handful of people with a DSLR...most of which were on the sidelines. Everyone else had smart phones, point and shoots, and smaller cameras.

I like it for many reasons. Being able to shoot 4K (for future-proofing) is important to some of my clients. I actually very much like the DSLR form factor, and with my C100 it makes a nice camera package. Size and ISO performance are certainly very nice to have, especially with jobs this month that will need good low-light performance.

Oh, and it shoots amazing still images, which is more than a bonus for me.

Having been shooting with Epic/Scarlet, F3, C300, and a bunch of other cameras, the 1DC offers a nice size/performance balance. Do I wish it cost $3K less? Of course. But I'm glad I've got one.

SO verses the reds which strike me as kind of the same size, it would be ISO? .. makes sense to me

Actually the Epic/Scarlet is larger and much heavier in the hand than the 1DC, not to mention the size of the batteries, LCD, etc. to make it a workable config. Don't get me wrong, I loved the images from my Epic, but I prefer the form factor of the 1DC, and the images are perfect for my and my clients' needs.

So far I love everything about the 1DC except the price of the red sticker. I do have one hesitation though, Shane has mentioned on his blog that the 1DC likes a lot of light thrown at it in contrast to the MKII which likes to be starved of light (Shane's words not mine, mine doesn't like to starve much). As a starving indie that's a concern for me, I don't have a truck full of lights. I would imagine he's just saying you need more light to get the best out of it which goes without saying.

No more than you are. Do us and him a favor and let him know what you did with his answers to your leading question, or perhaps I'll dig out my old crew lists (it's been years since I worked with him so I'll have to dig through all my dead trees) and let him know directly.

Sorry, you've lost me, I think you might be confusing me with Simon, he asked Shane the question.

The point I was trying to make is you can only speak for yourself, everyone has their own opinion on what "indie" means. Shane's interpretation may or may not differ from mine but I imagine it wouldn't be much different. I don't disagree that Shane is bi. :Drogar-Shock(DBG):(studio + indie)

Is it paid work that specifically requires a 1D C and 4K Mick?

If not then waste of money no?

The clients both understand the benefits of 4K, and were willing to pay for them.

And as a businessman, I don't make it a habit to waste my money, regardless of client needs.
