Canon HV20 and Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0

I recently received a Canon HV20. As part of learning how to use it, I shot some 1080i HDV 24p footage.

Using Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0 and the HDV 1080i 25 (Sony 50i) preset project settings, I captured the footage to my hard drive (which looks great) and did some preliminary sequence and sound editing.

However, I can't seem to export a high quality/defintion file (esp when compared against the original footage). I've tried a variety of export settings, but none have worked so far.

What settings should I use? At this point, file size doesn't matter.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hi, Just a tad curious how 1080i as in (i for Interlaced) can be shot in 24P in which P means Progressive? You get what I'm saying....? Could that have anything to do with your isssue... I think it may have to do with the appropriate timeline for what you are trying to achieve.

It's a misnomer. The HV20 actually shoots in 1080p, where 1080 simply refers to the vertical resolution and the p means shooting in progressive. It's not correct to call it 1080i 24p though quite a few people do it. It might be correct however to call the Canon 24F mode 1080i 24F since the chip scans in interlaced and not progressive.

Perhaps this could be contributing to my difficulties. I have read some hintings about Canon's pseudo "24p."

What settings would you recommend, jade8472, both import and export?

It has nothing to do with your problem. The HV20 captures true 24p from its natively progressive chip.

Looking back at your first post the first thing I see is that you're using the wrong timeline. Version 2.0 doesn't have a timeline for 1080 24p, but that doesn't matter too much. The HV20 doesn't have pulldown flag to tell Premiere which extra frames to remove to get 24p, so you're always editing with a 24p in 60i stream. You have two choices:

1)Use an external program such as After Effects to strip the pulldown frames and then edit using the Canon 24F preset (available on the adobe website).
2) Leave the pulldown and edit in a 1080 60i timeline.

As to export option, I always use Adobe Media Encoder HD WMV 720p preset (1080p will work but it's too slow for most computers to play). Remember to change the audio codec from default Professional 9.1 (or something like that) to just normal, or else it won't render.
