Canon FD 85mm 1.2 L with LEX

I'm seeing the smudge too, especially when pointed at the sky with the aperture stopped down. I'm curious if a polarizer would help by preventing the light from scattering too much in the adapter. I'll try it out tomorrow.

OK, so I am myself now convinced that you have to keep the EX1 open at at least f8 to achieve an image that shows absolutely no ground glass artifacts.

I went out to the lake and used ND2 and Gain -3db with EX1 aperture at f4 to f5. Images are sharp and no smudge.

I also did some tests from my balcony. ND off, Gain 0db, f16. You can see the smudge and it is the ground glass that becomes visible. These images are also very blurry. Not nearly as sharp as when you keep the EX1 iris as open as possible.
