Canon EOS C100

Let's not forget the FS700 also only offers 24mb/s 4:2:0 AVCHD. It's a tricky position for Canon, if they included the 4:2:2 codec from the C300, they'd undermine it entirely - and although not popular in Internet-forum terms, the C300 is already HUGELY popular in broadcast production (by most reports).

What the C100 offers is that same lovely image quality, at a more accessible price point and without the broadcast-readiness of its bigger brother.

Add an outboard recorder when shooting for broadcast. HDMI out only though.

This is exactly it. I know some companies that were about to purchase a bunch of 5DMK3 because they wanted 'the Canon look'. This camera is very attractive to broadcasters also. Lets not forget with HDMI out and a hyperdeck shuttle we can get DNX with TC right out of the cam for many broadcasters established on Avid that is huge.

I think for those concerned about every single penny the FS700 is a better deal but absolutely loath that form factor and have no use for highspeed. If the image in the C100 looks great it will be a cheaper alternative to the C300 on reality shows and doc stuff in my opinion. I see no reason to shoot on a 5D3 for only a few grand less.

What do you mean you see no reason? The sensor size maybe?

AVCHD is not that big of an issue to me if the price is attached. Imho, no camera over $5,000 these days should have AVCHD. Especially when Canon has the 4:2:2 codec in less expensive cameras. We are too far into this HD thing to be overly compressing the footage.

Anyway, I would never purchase a camera that does not have 60p. Shame as I am sure this camera will have a nice image.

I would like to start the nominations with the C-100 for the first annual "Camera no one wants awards" Cant think of any reason this would sell to anyone over FS700. Perhaps there is more info coming that will make this cam more attractive or competitive.
Even the XF codec at 1080 in this cam would get my attention. I don't understand this camera.
Could not have said it better. I was really looking forward to a C100... or, well, at least, what I thought the C100 would be. I almost bought a C300, but was put off at the last minute by the lens mount situation, and figured that I could wait for a C100. I was expecting an XHA1 vs. XLH1 type of situation -- all the goodness, half the price. But really, at this price point, compared to the FS700, it's a no-brainer, the FS700 slays this. Same price, but with the FS700 you get SDI and high-speed and 4K upgradeability and a flexible lens mount that can at least be adapted to take PL lenses... sheesh, no contest at all.

If I wanted a large-sensor AVCHD 4:2:0 8-bit camcorder with ND's and XLRs, I'd ... well, I'd buy the AF100, for less than half the price of the C100, and I'd get SDI output and variable frame rates up to 1080/60p too. I'm sure the C100 will make better images, but $3500 vs. $8000, it's not even in the same galaxy.

Once again, Canon profoundly misses the boat.

I am on the look out for a camera for wildlife and I would not want attaching too many stuff like external recorders. Without broadcast ready codec, this camera would be out. Will wait for the 1D C announcement.

4:2:0 is a bit tough especially while matching various looks and heavy grading. (according to my nascent editing experience as well as what my film editor told me).

I am wanting to dive into my filming project, however, waiting for the camera.

I just saw the claims about pricing. I guess we'll see in November. Canon's own press release says available in November for $7999. That's what I'm basing my evaluation off of.

New reports are that the C100 may be around 5 grand. At that price it makes much more sense. At 8k......well, don't see any reason to buy it
instead of the FS700, especially with the metabones adapter (which I have for my FS100) now available so that the FS700 can use all the Canon
glass. I'm actually more interested in finding more out about the 15-47 and 30-105 zoom lenses they mentioned.

I think Press Release should be relied upon than other articles. 5k USD brings it to the 1D Mark IV still camera pricing and am ok with it. 8k USD is like 1DX. Can anyone educate me as to how this codec is better than the 1D X codec? If one is able to compromise on the video features and go for the still photo qualities, why not the 1D X then?

I was also kinda hoping for an XL-H1 or XH-A1/XF100 style camera body in the C100, except obviously with the S35 sensor and interchangeable lens capabilities. Priced at no more than maybe $4500 (not in the range of $5000 to $8000 ). As you said, for the money the AF100, or heck, a used FS100 would be a more logical option at this point. Especially if it is true that the C100 doesn't even have any kind of 60p options. Even my Rebel T2i has 720 60p!

Even if we didn't have stuff on the horizon like the Black Magic Cinema Cam and the Kineraw 2K, the C100 still does seem a bit overpriced. Add in those two into the equation and it really makes the C100 seem a bit ridiculous (at least $2000 more than the Black Magic, and maybe only about $1000 less at most than the Kineraw).

Perhaps we'll see Canon make a new line separate from the "C" line, and something in more of the XF300/XF100 body style, but with AVCHD? I suppose that could appear in the next year or so. Problem is, how many will have jumped to Sony or be shooting on stuff like the Black Magic?

Oh well, one more upcoming camera I either can't afford or don't want, to check off the list. Now to wait and see what Sony has to offer, what the GH3 will be capable of, and for some Black Magic footage to to start appearing in the wild.

The specs, on paper, are far from jaw dropping... But aren't we mainly here for image quality?

Not sure why everyone is scratching their heads really..... If, via HDMI out, it produces the same image quality as the C300, then surely everyone can understand why this is a better camera than the FS700 or any s35 alternative under $10k for 24/25/30p narrative?

I wasn't looking for this. I have 2 bmcc on order but if it has the look of the c300, I'll check it out. People got down on the c300 until they saw its image and workflow. It sounded like no one would buy a c300 when you could get a red but that changed when some footage came out.

4:2:0 8 bit out according Canon Pro Support, but they could be wrong. That would be the way for Canon to rescue things.

the hdmi, seriously? 8 bit is ok, but 4:2:0... that's shocking.

That's pretty poor then.... Although I still think people should just settle down until they see what images it produces though (and the specs are nailed). Too many people filming on paper specs.
