I got excited until I saw:

Recording Format
HD: AVCHD 4:2:0
SD: Down Conversion to MPEG2

Bit Rate
24, 17, or 7 Mbps

I know they have to separate the line, but it is such a shame... external recorders get on my nerves.

Hmm. Response to the Sony FS100 and/or EA50? It'd be nice if it were within their price range.

Edit - At $8,000, more like a response to the FS700, although I don't see it having 4K and high speed shooting.

I think this with an EOS-M mount (with a free EF adapter) for $4000 would be a real winner. Really surprised the maximum progressive frame-rate is 30FPS - especially as it is priced to compete with the FS700. 60P, even at 720, would have been welcomed.

No hd sdi (or it wouldve competed against the c300.)

This camera is an example of corporate watering down of gears. Typical canon?
c-log is awesome but on a 8bit 4:2:0? Seems like a waste.

On the other hand, sony is definitely doing a lot in such short amount of time

They want $7999 (http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/29/canon-announces-eos-c100-cinema-camera/) for an 8-bit AVCHD camera that maxes out at 30FPS progressive - talk about missing the mark...again.

Exactly, at 8 grand anyone who has that kind of money to throw about will most probably stump up the extra cash for a c300, scarlet or f3, and obviously it's far to expensive for the DSLR crowd to consider. not sure where they're going with this one, if it were 3 or 4 grand cheaper to put it in line with the fs100 or af100, then it would make sense, but 8 grand is just mental for a camcorder that records avchd, a format that falls way below most HD broadcast requirements.

So...8k...yeah... That's fs700 money, except the fs gives full HD slow-mo and the possibility of 4k (not that I care about 4k at the moment). Really, canon? Also wasn't the 4:2:2 50mbs the main attraction of the c300 over the fs100/700/f3? Now that the c100 doesn't have the canon C-series's signature dish.. umm... really can't get too excited over this one. Not one of canon's most exciting release.

This era seems to be quite new for Canon. It is like they are offended at the current market and are trying to teach it a lesson. Canon has always had a price premium on their products but they always have delivered. This camera is overpriced and under delivers. Seems like a waste to have sacrificed the video on the 5DMKIII for this release. The 5DMKIII has 60p! Kind of out of touch.

Anyway, the GH3 is going to look even better to people now.

I can imagine the canon CEOs going 'affordable S35?! what's that? Ha!'

I would like to start the nominations with the C-100 for the first annual "Camera no one wants awards" Cant think of any reason this would sell to anyone over FS700. Perhaps there is more info coming that will make this cam more attractive or competitive.
Even the XF codec at 1080 in this cam would get my attention. I don't understand this camera.

Let's not forget the FS700 also only offers 24mb/s 4:2:0 AVCHD. It's a tricky position for Canon, if they included the 4:2:2 codec from the C300, they'd undermine it entirely - and although not popular in Internet-forum terms, the C300 is already HUGELY popular in broadcast production (by most reports).

What the C100 offers is that same lovely image quality, at a more accessible price point and without the broadcast-readiness of its bigger brother.

With the single button focus and exposure settings, combined with low weight and finally getting XLRs and waveform on the new in body LCD, this is now a viable ENG cam, and a much better doc camera. And, yes, I have shoot with the C300, and we did not buy me offered to us at only $10.5k becuase it did to meet our team's needs, and neither did the FS700.
