Canon EOS 70D Announced

Ah yes, the beginning of more incremental updates.

I see it more as a "trickle-down" of features from the flagship models to the consumer/prosumer models.

I wonder if this camera will be capable of supporting Magic Lantern Raw?

That would be pretty sweet for a $1200 camera that uses cheap SD cards!

No headphone jack, no 1080 60p, but there is a touch screen and better AF...not really worth the difference between the price of a 60D. They are reminding me of Microsoft, with their non-update updates.

This lack of headphone jack really annoys me. What is with camera manufacturers not putting them on cameras? Are they seriously using that as a distinguishing feature between a high end model and mid range model? We used to get a headphone jack on $400 DV cameras 10 years ago.

It's more than annoying. They really have done something with this sensor, and it's improvements are directly related to its cinema capabilities, and they neglect to include a rudimentary feature like a headphone jack, but they include a mic jack if you chose to use a high quality professional microphone. Yeah, who the hell cares about hearing said microphone! Visual meters are useless when trying to gauge the quality of the level being recorded. Visual levels are only useful after the quality of the signal has been determined. Dumb asses! This camera competes directly with the GH3 ...EXCEPT IT DOESN'T....AT ALL!!! This camera actually ticks off all the boxes for me except for that one crucial one! I'd say more, but I'm too filled with profanity to continue.

relax. It's and Hdslr and people clamoring about headphone jacks are just going to dual record anyway. Incremental update? SO they should just toss the roadmap in the trash and release the very last and best camera they can? "well we had plants for the 70d, 80d and 90d. But we just skipped ahead and are going to release the 140d and will be the last camera we make". LOL, how silly is that?

Really, they're saving the headphone jack for the 90D?? The D7100 has one now. The GH3 has one now. The idea is to compete, and this just doesn't without it. The whole idea of the DSLR form factor is a cinema package that is convenient and not have to carry an extra recording device. If I were doing big projects, of course I would relent and go double system, but that is just way to much hassle for my purposes.

If they offered a 70D for 1,200 and a 70D Extreme (with only a headphone jack addition) for 1,499, I'd buy the damn thing. I think A/D conversion is adequate. The mic pres are not, but can be bypassed by turning down the gain. (Does the 70D have manual audio control, don't know) and using a juiced link with nice mic pres, XLR & phantom power. I think the AF will rock in this thing, and the IQ will be more than adequate. It comes so close ...considering my collection EOS lenses!

No doubt, the 7DII will have a headphone jack and it will serve as part of the enticing feature set that set that cam apart from the 70D. But the feature set of the 70D should be comparable to the D7100 & GH3 at the $1,200 price point.

You can still get a headphone jack on a $250 Canon Vixia, or even a $50 iPod Shuffle. Hell, I'd pay an extra $50 or even $250 for just a headphone jack.

Actually I paid more than $250 when I bought a $1300 GH3 over a $500 GH2, what were the main selling points for spending over 150% more? Headphone jack, separate mic / remote inputs, 1080p60 & higher bit rates, so I'm happy with my decision.

It has been almost 5 years since the 5Dii, I kind of think Canon isn't going to add headphone jacks any time soon if they haven't already. Probably biggest motivation is if people stopped buying Canon DSLRs.

I'll be floored if they don't include one on the 7DII, their flagship APS-C camera.

Who did dual recording on a DVX? Anyone? HVX? EX1? Is anyone slapping a H4n on the back of a AF100? C300? C100? In my personal opinion, dual record is complete BS at this stage of the game. It can be forgiven for the 5Dii & maybe even the 7D, since those were so early on. But anything & everything after that, Canon knew (or should've) known the value of a headphone jack.

The only reason why it isn't included has to be money. 5Diii has a headphone jack, 6D doesn't. $1,000+ price difference between the two. It has to be the money. No other rational reason.

I'm betting you're going to be floored. But I'd be happy if I'm wrong.

I have big doubts. The 6D doesn't have a headphone jack. I'll place my bets 10 to 1 that the 7Dii won't have a headphone jack. Only reason I see Canon adding a headphone jack to the 7Dii is if they feel like they're losing market share to Nikon, Panasonic & Sony.

The thing that really irks me about headphone jacks is that I felt that Canon had a great track record of offering lots of features in their video cameras. A decade ago I owned a cheap consumer Canon MiniDV camera. It had manual focus, manual white balance, manual exposure controls, etc. A friend bought a higher end Sony consumer camera that had some nice features, but if he wanted manual white balance he would've had to spend another $200-$300 on the next model up.

Oh trust me, the 7DII will have a headphone jack, but no flip screen. Give me a razor already.

What's all the fuss about no headphone jack? This is a 1k slr with video tacked on, not a 5 - 10k dedicated camcoder. if you're serious about audio you should be recording into an external device with decent pre amps and balanced xlrs anyway, something you will never get on an slr: they are image capture devices, not audio recorders. For the money this looks pretty good to me, intraframe codec, timecode, hi res LCD, and the image quality looks good based on the demo video. If the bitrate is right and they've got rid of the dreaded Canon Moire, aliasing and softness this could be the best slr for video this side of a gh3

I would trade a flash for a headphone any day, I think this is what should determine the cinema and still models of this cam, if nothing else, I WOULDN'T EVEN CARE IF THE JACK WERE ON TOP WHERE THE FLASH IS, and I had to plug in straight down. Canon, cmonn!! Stop with this nonsense, I get that their not going to put every feature we want on a dslr, but this is ridiculous, There's no reason they can't still do incremental upgrades with picture quality, weather proofing, frame rates, codec, raw, 4k, blah, blah, blah, If anything, sell a small breakout box with the necessary ports we want. Why give Tascam or zoom that market, it could be a non issue .At least they can still make a profit giving the features people want. Competition will eventually speak, and if canon has a lousy run with this model, they won't have much choice, but to give the consumer a camera that actually competes with todays market. I mean, pani gave us a headphone jack, so did Nikon. I'm pretty sure they will both continue to make incremental changes every few years. Especially canon dslrs, they have plenty of time to upgrade even if only for image quality. there's room for another ten years the way they go on their dslr front. just look at the 6d, it's picture quality is actually moving in reverse, now that's embarrassing.

For a C100 owner its the other way around: why does this 1K camera offer an intra-frame codec...?

But hey, it#s CANON, as in CAN't give you everything in ONe camera...

Really? You think something like a headphone jack should be reserved for a $5-10K camcorder when D7100 and GH3 already have demonstrated that this high tech wizardry can be put in a $1,200 DSLR. Hell, even the Samsung S4 Zoom has a headphone jack.

As I said, A/D conversion is adequate in the 70D. XLRs, good quality mic pres & phantom power can be provided by a Juiced Link via the mic in jack. Just turn down the camera recording level to 1 and bypass the analogue circuitry with the high quality Juiced Link mic pres. This is the problem with Canon's marketing department. They think (and they're right) they're dealing with a bunch of idiot photographers who don't know a damn thing about audio. Once these photographers get educated a bit, it's going to affect sales. GH3 and D7100 has it. Enough said.

The only way this BS is going to change is if they are shamed publicly. Look at the wonderful changes that happened to the 5DII because of the public discourse after its release.
