Canon EF Mounts vs Manual aperture control Lenses

Hi !

I am a Canon dSLR user and have accumulated a fair bit of Canon EF lenses collection. I know that Canon EF lenses do not have manual aperture control (electronically set via the camera bodies). My question is, if I were to mount any of my Canon EF lenses to a Letus Extreme for example, what would my default aperture be set to (eg: with a Canon EF-50mm f/1.8 lens) ?

Thanks for all your help in advance.

Just bring your camera along and set the appeture that you want with the SLR camera and just take it off the camera without switching off the SLR camera. The best is to see it with your SLR camera viewfinder on the set that you are taking. And set the appeture with it. That way you can tune the appeture to what you want before setting it up on the Extreme

Thanks David,

So let me confirmed by saying that in order to set an aperture of f1.8 (on a Canon EF 50mm f1/.8 lens), all you have to do is use an SLR to set the aperture, unscrew from the SLR (without switching off) and the EF lens aperture will lock to that value.

That's a bit of an inconvenience but I guess that should do the trick. I just have to lug an extra dSLR body around ;-)

Thanks again for the info. Really appreciate it. Cheers !!

No worries,

Why don't you try it out now, Just look at the lens appeture without it being on the SLR. And then look at it after taking it off with the set appeture .

You will notice that the lens appture will be set at where you left it on the SLR

Ok, I hope for the last time:

DavidChia, I truly believe your intentions are honest , but please do not try to help if you do not know what you are talking about. Sorry for the cruelty of my post, but I had lost valuable time on this matter last year by people suggesting the same thing you did, obviously not knowing the basics of how an SLR camera works.

best

In summary, you have to press the DOF button to "lock" the aperture on EF lenses and unscrew (while dSLR body is on). So, basically, without doing this, the EF lenses are set to their default wide open aperture right ?

It'll require a bit of work but hey I'm not complaining at all considering I have all these EF lenses (some are "L" glasses). Might as well put em to use as I'm not actively shooting with my dSLR for the time being.

Thanks everyone for the input. Really cleared up this issue once and for all for me and hopefully for others who are in the same boat.
