Canon Develops Global Shutter-Equipped CMOS Sensor

wonder if the the C700 will have this global shutter sensor

It sounds like they just came out with the sensor and don't know yet what they will put it in. From the announcement: "Canon will explore various industrial and measurement applications for the newly developed CMOS sensor and consider deploying it in the field of video production for cinema production applications, TV dramas, commercials and more."

They give no hard facts about size or res, but hopefully it's S35 or 135.

But global shutter is so high on my list I would take a camcorder with it, as long as the sensor is at least S16 and the resolution 2K.

To add some perspective: it sounds great, but it reminds me of this announcement, which took two years to become an actual product (this one). Though that announcement came with sample videos. And not all such announcements become an actual product.

No more NDA......this camera has got everything. It feels like an Alexa, built like one, but not as heavy...really good balance. Both myself and our rental manager Toby Fulp are soo happy that what we have been waiting for and knew Canon could build, was in our hands!

About time they built this. Too bad Canon won't do a swappable lens mount.
Maybe some day in the future......but I thinks it's worth noting that Canon is soo protective of the image, the glass, etc, that I feel it might be a bit of a trust issue in that they are slowly understanding there are qualified outside people that can do the change. Its not just a money issue......just my opinion.

Nice new toy Jim! Let us know when you shoot some tests or loan it out to an A-list DP to shoot some tests!
I don't think we are going to see production line prototypes until the first part of November. I'm pretty sure they have some ASC types wrestling over who gets to shoot first. We are planning a Saturday seminar where we can show more footage and have all the key Canon people here to show off the C700. Also, Canon is going to be more aggressive in getting us dealers our demo camera sooner vs. later and we will be adding cameras to our rental stock.

But according to Canon's whitepaper, you will have to get it with the PL mount. There are three models:

EF with rolling shutter
PL with rolling shutter
PL with global shutter

I don't know why they limit global shutter to the PL mount.
Good question...and I don't know, not explained to me...if I was to guess and please chime in here, could it have something to do with the EF and the communication between cameras and lenses? or DPAF and how it works? I could easily see Canon not wanting to compromise ANY of the auto focus functions they have worked so hard to create. The DPAF does have a whole second set of pixels so it "triangulates" the distance to the object so to speak.....again, I'm guessing here.
