Canon Cinema C300 - Preview

At first glance the RED seems to be the winner against the C300 but in retrospect, for us non-theater users, the C300 has a lot of advantages. Shooting 1080p means less time in post since shooting 4k on Scarlet would have to convert down anyway for most project (especially if you don’t have a hardcore editing workstation with a $5k REDrocket) but the big factor here is media. RED’s big catch is easily the $6-$10k of SSD cards you’ll have to buy to REALLY shoot anything substantial whereas the C300 records to “cheap” compressed media. If 1080p is your goal, then there may not be much of an advantage to shoot on RED. If Canon drops the C300 down to around $12k I think it would easily outsell the Scarlet.

The Dynamic Range on the Canon is yet to be confirmed...all tests though show great performance. I'm actually the guy who would say the C300 is perfectly fine for the theaters. In a day when soft DSLR footage is going to theaters, something like the C300 is perfectly acceptable as a base standard...best or not (which it's not).
