canon C series dslr's

From what I've *heard* the 4k comes from an H-crop of a full-frame sensor. I *think* (From reading forum posts) that that corresponds to the 18mp 1Dx sensor. 4K is more than 8 mp

Canon has had a prototype 4K prototype at shows, so I'd imagine they have been working on 4K for some time already.

Me too. But probably in the Sony F65 price range. I like to call that the "rental houses only" market. I bet if Red hadn't come along it never would've occurred to them to make a 4K camera normal humans can afford. Heck, it STILL hasn't occurred to Sony!

8 megapixels, still has to be debayred. Should be more than that to derive a true 4k, if I am not mistaken.

Technology has been moving fast enough, that they would've ended up doing it by accident. (ala 5D) Haha. But yes, Red definitely changed the game, by bringing years ahead of the rest, and cheaper than 720p 2/3" tech of the time.
