Canon adopts MPEG-2 Full HD (4:2:2) file-based recording codec for upcoming cam

I'm pretty sure that's what he meant. Red says the Scarlet 2/3" brain is $2500 and a shootable kit is $4750, so a $7500 brain would seem to put a shooting kit at $9750.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by no longer being further developed. MPEG-2 technology has certainly matured, but is still a very viable choice for an acquisition codec, offering distinct advantages (and disadvantages).
I recall reading literature from Panasonic about a year ago on the advantages of either AVC-Cam or AVC-Intra (I don't remember which) over MPEG-2. I am unable to find it, but my recollection was that it stated MPEG-2 was no in longer in development.

Had to bring this thread back... We have to purchase HD camcorders soon and waiting NAB announcements before making a final decision. Let's say Canon will indeed announce their new line of HD camcorders during NAB, my question is how soon are they going to be available to purchase in North America?
Does anybody remember the time frame of XH and XL-H1 series announcement and following delivery dates? Is delivery within a month after announcement pretty realistic, any ideas?...

Canon historically does *not* announce new cameras at NAB; they usually hold their own events. However, Canon also usually releases product very shortly after announcement; the XLH1 was about a month from announcement to shipping.

Thanks Barry, they have 2 weeks to make the announcement then..(if they want our money - not that they'd care)

Well Canon did announce the XL H1S and XL H1A at NAB 2008, so there is a very good chance they will announce something at this NAB (which is what I was told from them when I was at CES this year).

But who really knows besides Canon ... guess we'll find out any day now.

yes, indeed the updated XLH1 was announced at an NAB, but that was unusual. Typically at NAB Canon shows off its broadcast lens lineup, and doesn't really highlight its camcorder offerings at all.

But, historically, Canon didn't have a "pro" division of their camcorder lineup either. They just differentiated them a few years ago; maybe as part of that division, they're going to take a more active role at NAB? I've been watching Canon for about 15 years, and historically they haven't really made any sort of camcorder presence at NAB, but that may be changing now that they have reclassified the XHA1/XLH1/XHG1 as "professional" so ... yeah, we'll find out in a week.
